CHARLESTON, IL – Hazel LaVerne Hardesty, age 91 of Charleston, went to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 while at her daughter’s residence. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Services honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with Pastors Walt Truex and Vance Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the American Cancer Society. Gifts may be left on the memorial table at the visitation or service or mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
LaVerne was born September 23, 1925 in Harrisburg, Illinois, a daughter of the late Ernest and Eula (Banks) Hooten. She married Ulla D. (U.D.) Hardesty on March 7, 1943 in Missouri and they shared 72 years of marriage prior to his death on October 2, 2015. LaVerne is survived by a daughter, Becky Miller and husband Gene of Charleston; a son, David Hardesty and wife Kathy of Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren, Amy Evans, Elizabeth Stretcher, Jason Hardesty, Alexander Hardesty, Derek Hardesty and Ryan Hardesty; a step-grandchild, Lisa Davis; eleven great-grandchildren; and her three sisters, Carolyn, Jeannie and Thelma. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded by a son, James Hardesty and her brothers, Bill and Lowell.
LaVerne was employed in the housekeeping department at Eastern Illinois University. She was a faithful and longtime member of the First Church of God in Charleston and a member of the Women of the Moose Charleston Chapter 1175.
LaVerne enjoyed yard sales and rummage sales in search of her next treasure. She and U.D. spent many weekends and vacations camping and fishing and creating lasting memories with great-granddaughters, Emily and Abigail, who often accompanied them. LaVerne loved her family dearly and cherished their many special times shared.
