CHARLESTON, IL – Sharon Ann Juriga, age 73 of Charleston, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the chapel with Pastor Mary Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Casey-Westfield School District Music Program. Sharon was born in Coles County, Illinois on July 12, 1944, a daughter of the late Alva and Chloral (Johns) Hanley and a descendant of the Rennels and Johns families, early settlers in Coles County. She married Robert Paul Juriga on August 19, 1962 and they were married for 45 years before he passed away on April 26, 2008. Surviving are three sons, Will Juriga and wife Larysa, of Chicago, Greg Juriga of Charleston, and David Juriga and wife Van, of St. Louis. Also surviving are four grandchildren; Camilla, Andrew, Elana, and Aaron; a brother, Paul Hanley and wife Kay of Mattoon; five nieces, Emily Hanley Hudson (Darryl) and Yvonne Stoner, all of Mattoon, Beth Lampley (Devereck) of Huntington Beach, California, Janice LeBourgeois (Henry) of Houston, Texas, and Mindy Juriga, of Peoria, Illinois; and a nephew, Jared Juriga, of Florida. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma (Hanley) Cutright; a brother, Kenneth Hanley; and two nephews, Paul Douglas Hanley and Kenneth Curtis “KC” Hanley.
Sharon was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charleston and was the accompanist/organist until her illness in 2016. Previously, she was a member and accompanist/organist at the First Baptist Church in Charleston, for over 30 years. Sharon was a 1962 graduate of Charleston High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University in 1965 and her Master of Arts (piano) in 1966, also from EIU. She stayed at home and gave piano lessons while raising her three boys from 1967-1975, and taught K-12 Music at Westfield School District and Casey-Westfield School District from 1976-2011, for a grand total of 35 years. During her career, she produced over 37 high school musicals, many elementary school programs, music contests, and music appreciation lessons. She truly loved teaching music to children and will long be remembered by her many students for her sweet, happy, and kind way of teaching. She made a difference in the lives of all who met her.
After retiring, she spent the next seven years doing substitute teaching in area schools and played piano for Kermit’s Kove at Charleston High School. She also kept busy watching over her beloved Shelties. Sharon enjoyed helping others by playing for occasional funerals and weddings, loved to read, and was an avid photographer for her family. Her hobbies included scrapbooking and taking pictures. Her family meant the world to her and she will be greatly missed by them along with her many friends.
