Michael “Mike” Dean Szczeblewski, passed peacefully away at 1:33 am February 3, 2018, surrounded by the love of his family and friends at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Mike was born September 11, 1954, in Du Quoin, a son to Joe and Cecil (Stanhouse) Szczeblewski. He graduated from Sesser-Valier High School in 1972. He received his Associates Degree from Rend Lake College and a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Southern Illinois University.
Mike married his high school sweetheart, Krista Glenn, on August 20, 1976 at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Christopher and together they shared 41 years of marriage.
Mike worked several years at Consolidated Coal Burning Star No. 2 as an electrician and at Summit Environmental Technologies as a lab supervisor. However, his dream was to have his own business. Throughout the years, he opened several successful businesses. In 1985, Mike and Krista opened K&M Liquors and have continued to grow that business for thirty-two years.
Mike enjoyed tracking the stock market, playing pinochle, going to the casino, and watching reruns of Gun Smoke. Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his family, especially his wife, Krista, daughter and son-in-law Ashleigh and Tim, and grandson Ryne.
Mike was a kind, generous, intelligent person who was dearly loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Krista (Glenn) Szczeblewski of Benton; his daughter Ashleigh and son in-law Tim Reiman of Herrin, and grandson Ryne; two brothers, Jim (Trish) Szczeblewski of Mulkeytown and Tony Szczeblewski of Orlando, Florida; three sisters, Gretchen Dawson of Mulkeytown, Beth (Mike) Styve of Overland Park, Kansas and Nancy Szczeblewski (Charlie Cross) of Sesser; parent in laws Lester and Jean Glenn of Benton; eight nieces and nephews David, Tina (John), Marcy (Jason), Chad (Afton), Michael, Kyle, Kaitlyn and Skyler; seven great nieces and nephews, John, William, Matthew, Ryder, Jaycie, Callie and Adlie; and numerous cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Joe Szczeblewski, his brother Gary Szczeblewski; and his brother-in-law, David Dawson.
