Charlotte Elisabeth Barnes Hickerson Carney, age 91, of Wentzville, MO, formerly of Coulterville, IL, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 1:45 p.m. in her home.
Charlotte E. Carney was born to the union of Jane Creek Story Moore and Marion Luster House on March 10, 1927. She grew up in St. Louis, MO, where she lived with her mom, Jane; aunt, Esther; and grandmother, Grace “Gindy” Story. She attended John Marshall Middle School. She went on to high school at Sumner High. It was there she met Charles Herman Hickerson (now deceased). They were united in holy matrimony on November 22, 1944 in St. Louis, MO and had six living children. She met her second husband, Robert A. Carney, years later. They married on December 11, 1970 in East St. Louis, IL and resided in Coulterville, IL and he preceded her in death on November 22, 1998. Charlotte lived there for more than forty-five years. After the death of her husband, she lived with her daughter, Cheyenne for more than twelve years. From there, she lived with her grandson, Calbert, and his wife in North Carolina. She then returned to live with her daughter Cathy Oliver, until Cathryn became ill, at which time she moved back in with her daughter, Cheyenne in Wentzville, MO.
Charlotte had so many wonderful, unconditionally loving family and friends. Charlotte lived a full life and was very well loved by many. She was a member of the Bethel AME Church, Sparta, IL. She held positions of secretary/treasurer and served on many committees. When her church closed their doors, she then joined the United Methodist Church, New Athens, IL. She tithes there. Charlotte was a home care provider and worked at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, Barnes Hospital and Sparta Nursing Home and also loved writing letters and cards and babysitting. She also worked as a seamstress and milliner as a young mother, and because of her love for sewing and her generosity, she sewed many beautiful items for friends and strangers, up until the time she became vision impaired.
As an only child, Charlotte always wanted a big family. She loved to be with as many family members as possible and said she wanted a dozen of her own. After marrying Charles, she also affectionately referred to her two brothers-in-law, John and Richard and two sisters-in-law, Pricilla and Alice as her brothers and sisters and she loved them as if they were her own. They were a very close family. Charlotte’s love for her family was extended to others. She was affectionately known as “Mama Hick” in her neighborhood. She had several foster children. Her home was always a welcoming place to all who knew her.
