Kenneth Eugene “Gene” Denney, age 87, of Casey, IL passed away at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Casey Health Care Center, Casey, IL. He was born August 16, 1930 in Westfield, IL the son of Jestin Arthur Denney and Alta Pearl Moore Denney. On January 13, 1951 he married Rubye Eileen Denney and they celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to her passing away on March 3, 2014.
Survivors include his daughters, Toni Denney Davidson of Casey, IL and Alta “Dexxey” Lawyer of Casey, IL; grandchildren, Rachelle Carlen, Stefanie Collier (Troy), Bill Carlen and Heather Davidson; great grandchildren, Dylan Parr, Whitney Collier, Jadelyn Carlen, Gavin Davidson and Kayla Collier; great great grandchildren, Tavia and Tenzia Collier. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife; brother, John W. Denney; sisters, Carolyn Lamb and Mary Newlin; granddaughter, Zoe Collier and son in law, Gale Davidson.
Gene graduated in 1949 from Westfield High School, where he enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. He continued playing baseball and coaching baseball leagues for many years. Gene attended and was baptized as a young boy into the Westfield United Brethren Church. He was baptized in the Pinnell Pond. He was Moose Member. He kept himself busy collecting St. Louis Cardinal memorabilia, toys, Avon bottles, bicycle parts and lawn mowers, etc. to name a few. Gene worked for the City of Casey in the Water Dept., Young Radiator as a Painter/Tester and Union Steward and retired from Birchwood Shelter Care as the Maintenance Man. He always treasured his friendship with Mr. Cleone Markwell.
After retirement, Gene stayed busy by working on and fixing up bicycles and lawn mowers. When his health declined in the Fall of 2017 and Spring of 2018, he gave all of his mowers and equipment to a Great Friend, Larry Comer. Gene enjoyed watching the Cardinals baseball games, Illini basketball and football games, playing Blitz; but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his true and loyal companion, his dog, “Pepper”.
Per Gene’s request, a graveside service will take place at Casey Cumberland Cemetery for family on Friday, July 6, 2018. There will be no visitation.
