We met Doug & Betty in Charleston, Il at First Baptist Ch. We became friends, common bond in Jesus. After retirement spent time together ar Orange Beach. & Florida. We always kept in touch after we moved . We loved both of them dearly, with Smypathy to her family.

Aunt Betty was an amazing woman of love and faith. Her impact in my life was huge. She always greeted me with a kind word of encouragement, followed by a hug and a kiss. I have many good memories of family reunions that were so much fun. I also remember deeper conversations with she and Uncle Doug about the Lord. They loved talking about Jesus! CHARLESTON, IL – Betty Jean Bonewitz, age 85 of Charleston, went to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, July 12, 2018. Her earthly body will be cremated and laid to rest beside her husband at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. There will be no public visitation or service. Donations in her honor may be made to the Alzheimers Research Foundation and mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Betty was born June 17, 1933 in Huntington, Indiana, the daughter of the late Rudolph C. and Beatrick K. (Sult) Schultz. She married Douglas A. Bonewitz on August 8, 1954 and they shared 56 years of marriage prior to his death on April 12, 2011. Left to cherish her memory is a son, Bradley A. Bonewitz and girlfriend Cindy Smyser of Charleston; a daughter, Angela D. Tashima and husband Rick of Honolulu, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Justin C. (Heejung) White, Charles Hunter White, Douglas Andrew White, Joshua R. (Amanda) Bonewitz, James T. Watson, Martaya S. Watson, and Kelsey J. Hutchcraft; four great-grandchildren, Kaden W. Price, Ryley D. Bonewitz, Joseph Douglas Bonewitz and Maci L. Hutchcraft; Jameson Babb who received the honor of being considered a great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Zetta Schultz of Huntington. Betty was also preceded by a stepfather, Otto Stahl and a brother, Howard “Bill” Schultz.
Betty retired from retail sales with the Elder-Beerman store located in the Cross County Mall in Mattoon. Prior to her employment with Elder-Beerman, she and close friend, Shirley Scholes operated a wallpapering business as well as the Corner Cupboard Antique Shop located at the Five Points intersection in Charleston. Betty was a woman of great faith who loved the Lord and her First Baptist Church family. She served as a member and past leader of the Christian Women’s Club and was a deaconess. She was a compassionate and caring woman who was also devoted to her community serving as Treasurer of the local United Way and always generous with her charitable contributions. She enjoyed flower gardening and yard work and there was always time for antiquing. She was a loyal and devoted friend and cherished the 51 years of friendship she and Doug shared with Gene and Shirley Scholes. Betty’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been abundantly blessed because of her unconditional devotion and love for them.
