Obituary

Richard's Obituary

CHARLESTON, IL – Richard Lee Sherman, age 75 of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.   The Graveside Service, honoring and celebrating his life, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston with Tom Sherman officiating.  Donations in his honor may be made to The Foundation For Barnes-Jewish Hospital – Organ Transplant Center and left at the Graveside Service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.

Dick was born August 25, 1943 in Charleston, Illinois, to the late Ralph and Cynthia (Greene) Sherman.  He married Judith Motley on September 23, 1962.  Left to cherish their many wonderful memories is Judy, his loving and devoted wife of 56 years; his son, Tom Sherman and wife Diane of Humboldt, Illinois; four grandchildren, Sarah Flyte and husband Eric, Katie Robinson and husband Garrett, Austin Sherman and wife Megan, and Abbie Sherman; and a sister, Barbara “Bobbie” Miller and husband Jim of Rantoul.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Sherman.

Dick was a graduate of Charleston High School and furthered his education at E.I.U.  Many years ago, he worked for the Star Station in Charleston before accepting a job with the City of Charleston.  He was employed with the city for 27 years and retired as Superintendent of the Water Treatment Plant.

It was no secret that Dick was a huge fan of St. Louis Cardinals baseball.  He enjoyed working in his yard in the summer months and in winter, following a snow, many of Dick’s neighbors knew he would soon be there to plow their driveways.  He was a good friend and faithful member of the morning breakfast group that for years met every morning at What’s Cookin’ and now at WB’s.   Dick loved his family dearly and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and soon-to-be great-grandfather.  Dick’s family and friends will always treasure the many memorable times shared.
