Mary Catherine Baker, age 104, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, May 14, 2019 at Friendship Village, Schaumburg, IL. She was born October 19, 1914 in Martinsville, IL, the daughter of Claude Newman and Belle B. Bennett Newman. On May 15, 1937 she married Lonnie E. Baker in Anderson, IN; he passed away on November 4, 1976.
Survivors include her sons, Mike Baker (Karen) of Elgin, IL and Mark Baker (Cindy) of Chandler, AZ; five grandchildren, Tara Seals (Earl), Bryce Baker (Kristen), Jordan Baker, Evan Baker, Emma Baker; and seven great-grandchildren, Lindsey Silver (Tim), Kelsey Seals, Connor Seals, Taylor Seals, Ryan Baker, Cavan Baker and Megan Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters, Pauline Ingle Ward and Mildred Drake.
Catherine graduated from Westfield High School, received her teaching certificate from Eastern Illinois University, and began her teaching career at age 16 in a local one room school house south of Westfield. She continued teaching in Westfield and Paris, IL and as a reading specialist in Palatine, IL school systems. Catherine was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (teaching sorority) and a faithful member of the Westfield Baptist Church.
In her retirement she enjoyed her time at Friendship Village, working with the Activity and Marketing committees and in the Coffee Shop.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 at Westfield Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Hammond and Rev. Brian Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield, IL. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service on Friday at Westfield Baptist Church, corner of Fulton & State Streets, Westfield, IL.
