William “Charlie” Speakman, Jr., age 68, of Sparta, IL passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 6:40 p.m. in his home.
Charlie was born on June 8, 1950 in New Madrid, MO, a son of William Charlie and Agnes (Smith) Speakman. He married Kathy Marie Dodd on May 29, 1970 in New Madrid, MO and she survivors. Charlie was of the Christian Faith. Growing up in New Madrid, Charlie saved several lives as a life guard. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order Arrow in the Boy Scouts of America. Charlie was a distinguished graduate of Air Force Basic Training at Lackland, TX. He served his country for 35 years; 10 ½ years active duty and more than 20 years as a government contractor. He was a recipient of a Joint Service Commendation Medal at McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, FL. Charlie was a 32 degree Mason, following in his father’s footsteps. He was a previous member of the Scottish Rite of Southern Illinois; the Lion’s Club of Belleville, IL; and the Order of the Eastern Star, Nashville, IL. His hobbies included reading science fiction novels, notably Robert Heinlein; hunting, fishing, camping, bonfires and being with friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Speakman of Sparta, IL; one son, Sandy (Tracy Ann) Speakman of Glasgow, Scotland; one daughter, Tracy (Steve) Danner of Sesser, IL; six grandchildren, Chris Wilson, Stephen M. Speakman, Steven Danner Jr., Zak (Tonya) Danner, Grayson Danner and Collin Barrett; five great-grandchildren and many more extended family.
He was preceded in death his parents; one sister, Delia Gurnow; one brother, Daniel Speakman Sr.
Funeral services will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with Brother Jeff Downard officiating.
Visitation will be held at Pyatt Funeral Home, Coulterville, IL on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the family or Alcoholic’s Anonymous.
