Shirley Parker Obituary

Shirley Richards Parker

Shirley Richards Parker, 80, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away peacefully at the hospital on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, after a brief illness.

Born in Athens, Ga., to MaryBeth and Charles Howard Richards, Shirley grew up with her brother, Chuck Richards (Susan), and sister, Doris Percy (John). The family eventually settled in Lynchburg, where she graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1964.

Shirley's greatest joy was her family. She was the proud mother of three children, Wendy Ashby (David), Jay Parker (Staci), and Kevin Parker (Corrie); and the loving "Grammy" to nine grandchildren, RJ (Lauren), Nick (Lindsay), Colton (Morgan), Nathan (Vitoria), Tyler (Allison), Kyle, Landyn, Eian and Reece; and eleven great-grandchildren, Quade, Hadley, Jaxon, Easton, Cooper, Addyson, Tatum, Nolan, Stetson, Lincoln, and Turner. To all of them, she wasn't just Shirley-she was Grammy, their biggest supporter and constant presence. Her family was the center of her world, and she never missed an opportunity to cheer them on-whether at football, wrestling, soccer, baseball, volleyball, or swimming. Ask any of them, and they will tell you: you could always hear Grammy's voice in the stands, full of love and encouragement. She is also survived by many beloved extended family members and friends whom she loved dearly.

Christmas was Shirley's favorite time of year, a season when her love shone brightest. She poured her heart into choosing thoughtful gifts, creating memories, and making sure everyone knew how deeply they were loved. She also expressed her devotion through the beautiful quilts and knitted washcloths she made for her family. Each quilt was crafted with care, a lasting reminder of her warmth and creativity.

Shirley's generosity extended far beyond her family. She was a devoted friend, always ready to give a ride, lend a helping hand, or offer support to anyone in need. Her giving spirit knew no bounds-she truly would give the shirt off her back or her last dollar to help someone else.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, VA, on Friday, October 3, at 3 p.m., with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in honor of Shirley's legacy of love and generosity.

She will always be remembered as Grammy-our loudest cheerleader, our warmest hug, and the heart of our family.

"His lord said unto him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy lord.'"-Matthew 25:23
