Elisabeth Spencer Obituary

Elisabeth (Becky) Alayne Spencer, age 80, died peacefully in her Lodi home with her beloved husband of 58 years by her side early Thursday morning, September 23, 2010. She passed on back to her Father's presence while diligently undergoing and pursuing treatment for lumbar stenosis.
Becky was born on December 14, 1929, in Riverside, California. She graduated from PolyTechnic High School and Redlands University with a teaching degree. She fell in love shortly after and married her college sweetheart Gerrard (Gerry) Spencer on August 23, 1952. They were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah Mormon Temple a year later. Becky began teaching 1st grade while Gerry completed dental school at USC. When they settled down in Lodi with their young family in 1968, Becky became a dedicated homemaker while Gerry pursued his dental career.
Becky was a long time active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a 25 year breast cancer survivor. She enjoyed visiting with the sisters of the Lodi 3rd Ward, shopping with her daughters, and discovering new restaurants with her best friend and husband, Gerry.
Becky leaves behind her beloved and devoted husband, Gerry Spencer; three daughters, Saralyne Spencer and Elisabeth (Liz) Kuchenthal of Lodi, and Stacy Maynard of Iowa; six grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Sookrum of Texas, Marie (Eric) Versteeg of Lodi, Jennifer Adams and Stefanie Gardenhire of Los Angeles, Michael Kuchenthal of Auburn, and Grady Gardenhire of Salinas, and three great grandchildren, Gillian and Jackson Versteeg, and Lucian Sookrum. She is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Sally Beckett, brother Tom Beckett, son Gerrard Spencer, Jr., daughter Vivian Spencer, and grandson Lance Spencer Gardenhire.
Visitation will be held at Lodi Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 6pm-8pm. A chapel service will held on Wednesday, September 28, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 731 N. Ham Lane, with an additional visitation to be held at the church before the services at 9am. Graveside dedication to follow at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery. Bishop Eric Shields will be conducting the chapel service and Michael Kuchenthal will be dedicating the grave. A virtual register book may be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com. Lodi Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Becky and I became the best of friends from the moment we moved in and she walked across the street with a Boston Cream Pie. I knew that God always intended for Becky to be in my life. Becky was always available for a laugh, a shoulder to cry on and she could always make me hopeful for the future. So until we see each other again my friend. I love you.

I still remember when Gerrard and Becky were married in our living room on Central Ave. I was such a young and impressionable child.....it was a beautiful occasion. Becky was always so kind to me as a young teenager I will never forget her.

October 17, 2010

Dear Gerry: I was so sad to receive your letter, but when I saw the envelope, I had a hunch the message it would contain. Becky and I go'way back to junior high at Central. I was her "campaign manager" once when she ran for a class office. She was a wonderful person and tho we hadn't seen each other for 60+ years I always looked forward to hearing from the two of you each year. I'm so sorry for your loss and I send my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. Jeri Hixson Taylor, Indio, CA
