Lucile Smith Obituary

Lucile Smith enjoyed traveling, writing poetry, reading; 85 Concord Lucile (Edson) Smith, age 85, of Concord, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. She was the devoted and beloved wife of Peter W. Smith for nearly 62 years. Mrs. Smith was born on October 2, 1922, in Worcester, the daughter of Col. Carroll A. and Hazel (Partridge) Edson. Although her father's Army career took their family to many cities, towns, and states while she was growing up, the one constant was the family's ancestral home in Brookfield, Vermont. It was to Brookfield that she also returned every summer of her adult life. After earning a bachelor's degree from Wheelock College, Mrs. Smith taught first grade for two years. She and Peter Smith were married in 1946. Although they lived many places while they raised their four children - including New York, Ohio, Connecticut, and Massachusetts - she always considered Concord her home. Lucile Smith devoted her life to her family, most especially her husband, children, and grandchildren. In later years, she also enjoyed traveling, writing poetry, reading, and attending community theatre productions and Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Andrew Smith of Ashfield, Laurie Smith-Frailey of Westford, formerly of Burlington, VT, and Pamela Schweppe of Maynard; eight grandchildren; her three siblings' spouses; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Stanley Smith of Littleton, who died in March. SMITH Lucile (Edson) age 85 of Concord, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. Wife of Peter W. Smith. Memorial Service Friday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden St. Concord. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Gifts in her name may be made to the Historical Society of Brookfield, P.O. Box 447, Brookfield, VT 05036. Arrangements are under the care of CONCORD FUNERAL HOME, Belknap & Thoreau Sts, Concord.
