I had the great pleasure to work with Charlie from 1986 until his retirement. He had the wonderful combination of great technical competency and a cutting wit that turned bureacratic aggravations into a great amusement ride. His notes from staff meetings were the equal of the best of a Dave Barry column or a Dilbert cartoon. And I will never look at a Far Side cartoon without thinking of Charlie coming out of his office chuckling with a small square of paper in hand. Yet with all his delight in the irony of life, he was always a gentle and compassionate colleague. His knowledge and guidance was always of great value. I am greatly saddened to learn of his illness and passing,

Even in this time of overwhelming sorrow, when I think back on my memories of Charlie I can't help but smile. Rick and I will both remember him for his kindness and generosity and most of all his humor. He will be sadly missed.

Our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the Waterman family.

Matt, Jan and family, I cannot express the sadness we feel for your loss. I will never forget how he made me laugh, he had the quickest wit. I sincerely hope your good memories will bring you comfort at this time; I know there are plenty of them.

Charlie was my grandfather and one of the most good-humored men i've ever had to privelage to be related to. He had a unique sense of humor that could make even the dullest person laugh. I remember all the weekends i would go up to Kennybunkport to visit my grandparents in the morning i'd wake up around 7:30 and he'd be out on the porch reading the paper with my grandmother over a cup of coffee and right around 8 oclock he'd start cooking breakfast for us. Never missed a day. Though we had to see him in some of his worst days during his battle with lung cancer, he bravely accepted the situation and never once asked "why me?" or complained. In fact, upon diagnoses, he asked my grandmother for a birthday present (once in a life time occurence), he wanted a Calculus book. He never got the oppurtunity to take the course in college and wanted to go back and do all the problems. We miss you Grandpa and your forever in our memories, not a day goes by where you don't cross my mind. We all Love you.
