Edward Lawrence Obituary

Edward Lawrence Lowell, active at St. Anthony's, WW II vet; 85 LOWELL Mr. Edward Lawrence, a resident of Lowell, died Aug. 1, 2008, after a lengthy illness, with his loving family by his side, aged 85 years. He was a World War II Army and Navy Veteran. He was born in Lowell, on February 10, 1923, the son of the late Peter O. and Mary (Fratus) Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence received his education in the Lowell School system, graduating from Lowell High School with the class of 1941. He matriculated at Boston University, earning his Bachelors Degree in Business. On Nov. 8, 1943, Mr. Lawrence enlisted in the United States Army at the former Fort Devens in Ayer, MA. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American campaign Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged as a Sergeant with the 1947th Service Command Unit in San Luis Obispo, California. He then enlisted in the United States Navy on August 28, 1947 in Squantum, MA. He served at the Squantum Naval Air Station for 5 years and was honorably discharged on August 27, 1952. After his service, he became associated with the Sheraton Hotel chain, serving as their auditor, traveling throughout the United States and later worked as an Internal Revenue Service Agent, (Lawrence District) out of Boston. Edward retired after 20 years of service and was the recipient of the Albert Gallatin Award from the United States Treasury Department for distinguished service. He was a Communicant and very active member of St. Anthony Church, where as a young man served as an Alter Boy and over the years participated in many Church festivals, Feasts and celebrations. Ed was an avid saltwater fisherman, and often times in the spring and summer you would find him deep sea fishing off the coast of Cape Cod. He was a wonderful man who was loyal and loving to his family and friends. Eddie will always be remembered as a thoughtful, kind and gentle man with a heart of gold. He will be missed dearly by his family and many friends. He is survived by his brother, Richard Lawrence and companion, Donna Domer of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Norma McDonald of Pepperell, Irene and Thomas Burns of Chelmsford, and Janice and John DeSilva of Lowell; also by two sisters-in-law, Marie Lawrence of Westford, and Martha Lawrence of Lowell; also by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Frank and Alfred Lawrence and the late Dolores (Lawrence) Landoch, and brother-in-law to the late Ted Landoch and John McDonald. Also his longtime companion, the late Peggy Matthews. LAWRENCE Edward Lawrence, of Lowell, died Aug. 1, 2008, his loving family by his side, aged 85. WW II Army and Navy Veteran. Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS FUNERAL HOME, 122 Princeton Blvd. at Chester and Harvard Streets on Tuesday from 6 to 8 P.M. Funeral from the Funeral Home on Wednesday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral Mass at ST. ANTHONY CHURCH, Central St. Lowell at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell.
