Gary David Fernandez

Gary David Fernandez taught at Fitchburg State College; 56 FITCHBURG Gary David Fernandez, age 56, a resident of Fitchburg, MA, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, while on assignment for International Education Program in Trinidad, West Indies. Born in New York City, on Sept. 15, 1951, he was a son of the late Augustin and Mirta (Calvo) Fernandez. He attended schools in New York City and was awarded a scholarship to Brandeis University upon his graduation. He attended Brandeis and completed his undergraduate education at the University of Mass. at Boston. His advanced degrees in Psychology and Counseling were earned at Fitchburg State College. Gary was director of Guidance and High School Principal at the American School in Managua Nicaragua for 12 years, and has been in the Guidance Department for six years at the Broomfield School in Harvard, MA. He helped many students to enroll in their first college and Myriads of scholarships he helped them find...his tracks and fingerprints touched more than transcripts but their hearts as well. Gary was active in his early years in the Republican Party of New York. He worked for John Lindsey, and was chairman of the Young Republicans of New York for Richard Nixon. He was also a volunteer for Nelson Rockefeller. He was an adjunct faculty member at Fitchburg State College where he taught both graduate and undergraduate. Gary was a faculty member of the International Education Programs at Framingham State College. He was a member of the Harvard Teachers Association, and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. He is survived by Dear Friends, Mary Ellen Normandin and family of Chelmsford, and Francis Leahy of Leominster. He was also the brother of the late Augustin Fernandez Jr. who died in January of this year. Family and friends may call on Friday, Aug. 29th from 4 to 8 P.M. at the ARCHAMBAULT FUNERAL HOME, 309 PAWTUCKET ST., LOWELL. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church, 118 Theresa St., Fitchburg.
