Wilmerth Sullivan Obituary

Wilmerth P. 'Sully' Sullivan Jr. of Lowell, Army vet, Korean War; 74 LOWELL Mr. Wilmerth P. "Sully" Sullivan Jr., of Lowell, died September 23, 2008, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell, after an extended illness, aged 74 years. He was the husband of the late Mildred A. (Felton) (Roper) Sullivan. A United States Army veteran of the Korean War. Born in Lowell on November 8th, 1933, he was the son of the late Wilmerth P. and Ruth (Chapdelaine) Sullivan. He received his education in the Lowell school system. In December of 1950, Mr. Sullivan enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a parachute instructor and a mortar tester at Fort Benning, Georgia. He had also participated in the atomic warfare experiment conducted in the Mojave Desert in May of 1953. Mr. Sullivan was honorably discharged in December of 1953. Sully was a member of the National Guard from 1978 to 1985, and a longtime member of the American Legion Post #247 of Tyngsboro. Following his return to Lowell, he worked at various jobs including United Elastic, Steeple Jack, and High Voltage Engineering of Burlington. He will be remembered for his many years as "Sully" at Elliott's Hot Dogs. He also worked as a chef and bartender at many area restaurants. Bill was a great athlete in his youth, loved to play pool, was an ace at cribbage and an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Bill was adored by all of his children, and grandchildren who he enjoyed spending time with he was easy to please man who never asked for much and always had a positive attitude and will be remembered for his patient and kind nature. Mr. Sullivan is survived by his beloved children, Billy Sullivan of Chelmsford, Donna Merrill and her husband, Bud of Groton, Bruce Sullivan of Boston, Rick Roper of Westford, and Janice Connolly and her husband, Jack of Groton; 25 loving grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren He was the father of the late Mark W. Roper, Jr., and Charlotte Roper Gilbride. SULLIVAN Died in Lowell, September 23, 2008, Mr. Wilmerth P. "Sully" Sullivan Jr., of Lowell, aged 74 years. He was the husband of the late Mildred A. To Billy and all your brothers & sisters. I just read of your father passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. I have alot of great memories of Christmas eve, when your father was always there. He was a great man. I know he will be truley missed.
