Ralph Mercier Obituary

Ralph P. Mercier "Rambo" LOWELL Ralph P. Mercier, 69, well-known Lowell resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, at his home, after a long courageous battle with emphysema. He was the husband of former Mayor and present City Councilor, Rita M. Mercier. A son of the late Romeo and Esther (Burpee) Mercier, he was born Oct. 20, 1938, in Manchester, NH, and educated in that area. A resident of Royal Street until 1999, he currently made his home in Belvidere, and was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, where he had exchanged Wedding Vows with Rita 41 years ago. He was a former President of Local #39, Painters and Allied Trade Union for 21 years working throughout the New England Area, specializing in painting water and chemical towers and tanks. He worked for C.E.T.A. as a deleader. He later worked for the Lowell Housing Authority until illness forced his retirement. He loved his family, and enjoyed their trips to the ocean and Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH. Ralph enjoyed politics and worked on the campaigns of Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, Senator Ted Kennedy, and former City Councilor Bobby Kennedy. He was most proud of being Campaign Manager for his wife Rita throughout the years and was her number one supporter. He also was an avid presidential campaign button collector, and enjoyed adding new buttons and showing off the older ones, as well as being the creator of numerous soups and chowders. In addition to his wife, Rita, he is survived by four children, David R. Mercier and his wife, Holly, Douglas R. Mercier and his wife, Jennifer, Kellie I. Dube and her husband, Brian, and Kristine R. Lutkus and her husband, Gerald; seven grandchildren, Jacklyn, Brykel, Tyler, Kyle, Brandan, Dylan, and Corey; a sister, Annette Warren and her husband, James; a brother, George J. Mercier; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was also the brother of the late Richard N. Mercier, the late Phyllis Dubey, and the late Martha Bragnowski. YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 2 UNTIL 5 AND 6 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON FRIDAY. ON SATURDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL (978 OR 800) 458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. PATRICK'S CHURCH AT 10 A.M. BURIAL IN ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Rita & Family,
My sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband. I remember your attendance at our 1st Annual Auction we had at the Elks for my granddaughter Stacy Stott who was killed on Aug 25th 02. You presented a proclamation certificate to my daughter Susan stating that August 25th 2002 as Stacy Stott Day. This meant a lot to our family. Some things you never forget. Rita, I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a loss for all the people that knew Ralph. I remember him for always having a smile and a joke to share whenever I met him. His illness never changed his super personality. I remember meeting the both of you in a supermarket and Ralph stating emphatically and with a smile, that "he" was the cook, when I asked; "why don't you have Rita do the cooking." There are a lot of memories like that, that may seem small and insignificant to some, but they're memories that I'll always remember and cherish. My family sends our love and deepest sympathies for your loss. He will remain in my heart always.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
