Mrs. Giddens
Our deepest sympathies go out to you. Dr. Giddens was such an inspiration to my parents when my father was attending Mercer in the late 70's. (John Jarrard Jr) Both of you were very influential in his life and I will always remember that. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.

Gladys:

Dr. Giddens and you were both influential people in my life and thousands of people in Athens. My mother always thought Dr. Giddens made you feel close to God when he would lead in prayer. I have so many fond memories of you both. I especially enjoyed talking Georgia football with him between services on Sunday morning. You will be in thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Giddens is one of those most influential people who helped shape my life. Because of the belief he instilled in his students, I finally am reaching my potential as a woman in ministry!

Our family has many fond memories of Dr. Giddens. He was the kindest person to everyone (especially my sister to whom he gave chewing gum each Sunday!). In addition to baptizing, marrying and burying members of our family, he was a good friend that we always enjoyed spending time with. We will miss him. Our hearts and prayers go out to Gladys.

Years ago as a student at Mercer University, I had the opportunity to take a class lead by Dr. Giddens.
Within the last year while my father was residing at Peake Healthcare, my family and I had the pleasure to spend some time with Dr. and Mrs. Giddens. Their love for God, each other and God's people spoke volumes.
Dr. Giddens, a true gentleman, served God and his community well.

As a freshman I was in Dr. Giddens's first (I think) Old Testament class in Mercer. That was September, 1967. I was impressed by the great vigor of his presentation, the amount of material presented, and his rigorous insistence that we learn the material. I learned about as much from that course as any I took in college. Dr. Giddens was the kindest and most decent of men. I renewed my acquaintence with him in recent years in the Rotary Club, and my affection and respect only grew. His was a life well lived.

Dr. and Mrs. Giddens were a shining light in the years we were at Mercer - making our "poor" weekends into "rich" with trips to Athens and beyond to follow those bulldogs with them. The added touch was the barbecue suppers and the pre-game snacks! Boy, those were wonderful times. I will never forget what they both told us, when we tried to pay our way as poor students. Pay it forward they said, pay it forward to someone else. That is their legacy. I love you, Dr. Giddens. You are not "gone," you have just "gone ahead."

I am so thankful for the precious gift of time that Dr. and Mrs. Giddens so freely gave me. Even now I am reminiscing of the long drives to Athens to see his "dawgs" play and the bantering of how to drive all the way there. I remember the walks with Dr. Giddens as he advised with parables...south GA style. I learned so much about what it means to be a mature Christian from his and Mrs. Giddens's life example. Certainly a Saint among us, Dr. Giddens will be long remembered in my life and my children's life as a good and faithful servant of our Lord, Jesus. Mrs. Giddens, I will be there soon to see you! Love you dearly!

Mrs Giddens
What a blessing you and Dr Giddens have been to so many "preacher boys" through the years. May God bless you and sustain you in the days ahead

He was a blessing to our family; he loved our children -- they could tell! But, also, from the very beginning until death took him from us, Duke Giddens was a very active member of the board of directors of Mercer University Press. He believed in the mission and ministry of the Press, and his counsel and encouragement made the way better for us. We will always be grateful for all he was and is to all of us. His memory will be a blessing!
Gladys, we pray for you a special measure of God's Grace and Peace!

Dear Gladys:
I have so many wonderful memories of working at Mercer and daily seeing Dr. Giddens. He always had a ready smile, embrace, encouraging and humorous word. The love that eminated from him infected everyone. He truly was a man of great courage, kindness and the love of God. He made our day when he walked on the hall or asked for our assistance. It was always a bonus in my life to hear him teach the Bible. His insights were always full of wisdom.
You had the best of the best.
Your friend in Christ,

Howard and Gladys will always been in my heart and mind as two encouragers and positive people. Yet another one of God's saints has graduated. Howard, Gladys, and Jean Hendricks were very dear to me and positive influences during my singing career. Thank you, Howard, for all the kind words. I look forward to seeing you again one day.

With gratitude and love for a life well lived. Thanks for the smiles, handshakes, and other expressions of support. The two faces of Howard and Gladys Giddens standing at the rear of Newton Chapel gifted an 18 year old freshman and his wife-to-be the joy that comes from walking close to Jesus. Peace!
