FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Evangelos G. "Angelo" Tzikas passed away March 2, 2009, at Imperial Point Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, after a brief illness.

He was born on May 1, 1923, in Augusta, Maine, the son of George and Haido Cook Tzikas, and spent his youth in Greece with his mother and siblings.

Upon returning to Augusta after the war, he owned and operated George The Tailor in Winthrop, Maine, and also owned Dairy Delight in Winthrop and Dairy Delight Recreation Center in Augusta, Maine.

He was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Merkouris.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorraine. He is also survived by a brother, Pigmaleon (Leon) Tzikas, of Augusta; two sons, George A. Tzikas of Davie and Winthrop, and Nick Tzikas, of Kannapolis, N.C.; one daughter, Lili Tzikas, of Davie; along with two grandchildren, Lance Hickey, of Davie, and Samantha Tzikas, of Winthrop. Angelo was also a past member of the United States Trotting Association, Maine Standard Breeders Association and the Florida Breeders Association. For many years he bred, trained and raised harness horses, which he also drove in Maine, New England and Florida. His greatest pride was his homebred stallion, Formal Misty, who held a track record as a 2-year-old in Maine. Angelo was a member of the Augusta Elks Club, where he enjoyed playing poker with his many friends.

He was a very energetic and hard-working person and was very proud of his family and his successful children. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Lorraine and family,

I'm saddened to hear of Angelo's passing.

Great memories of the 60's babysitting for Georgie and working at the Dairy Queens. I'll never forget the day the spoiled feta cheese arrived at the back door of the Dairy Queen that had sat all week-end at the UPS office before getting delivered in the heat of the summer.

Condolences from the Gordon family,

Lili, my prayers are with you and your family at this time of great sadness. One thing I will remember about your dad is how he always wanted to build or repair something for you. Whether it needed to be done or not… he just enjoyed helping you. I know he was so proud and happy on your wedding day, and I wanted to share that memory with you, and those who knew him, by placing some pictures in this website’s album. He loved you all dearly, and will certainly be missed by so many people!
