Shirley Kelley Obituary

AUGUSTA -- Shirley Gilbert Kelley, born May 14, 1912, went to be with his savior March 4, 2009.

The son of Annette Stanwood Peaslee and George Peaslee, he was adopted by Maurice and Myra Kelley.

Mr. Kelley was predeceased by both sets of parents; a sister, Hazel Peaslee Alley and her husband, Curtis; a half-sister, Vinelene System Carver and her husband, Glen; and his adopted family, Noyes Alley and his wife, Blanch, Octavia Alley Beal and her husband, Nat, Lula Alley and her husband, Almanda, Lawrence Kelley and his wife, Hannah, Fletcher Alley and Clayton Alley.

Shirley married Etta Beal, the daughter of George and Emma Beal. They were married for 74 happy years and best of friends. They had three children, Betty Lou Kelley Merchant, who passed away on Dec. 25, 1998; Arnold Leamont Kelley, of West Gardiner, and Ardis Marie Kelley Tibbetts, of Augusta, and her husband, William. Grandchildren are Audwin Merchant and his wife, Susie, and their five children, Anthony, Kaitlin, Matthew, Stephen and Kristin Bettylou, all of Dallas, Ga.; David Merchant and his daughter, Angel Richards, of Marietta, Ga.; Jesse Merchant and his wife, Laura, and their three daughters, Alisha, Jessica and Ashley, of Marietta; Laurie Alley Dyer and her husband, Matthew, and their family, Joshua Tobias and Kayla Tobias, of West Gardiner, Pfc. Zachary Tobias, Army, Fort Benning, Ga., and Richard Dyer and Nichole Dyer, of Unity. He also leaves son-in-law Jessie Merchant Sr. and his wife, Bettina, of Beals, and daughter-in-law Wilma Kelley (predeceased in 1998), wife of Arnold Kelley.

Shirley was a lobsterman and fisherman for more than 50 years. He also was part owner in three wiers. For many years, Shirley worked fishing for sardines. He and his wife lived on Beals Island all of their lives until 2005, when they relocated to Augusta to live with their daughter and son-in-law. Shirley attended Beals schools and was a member and deacon of Beals Advent Christian Church. For the past four years, he had attended the Chelsea Advent Christian Church with his family.

His passion was sports. He especially enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics and, in recent years, the New England Patriots. His hobbies included watching the birds around the feeders, flower gardens, woodworking and reading his Bible. Mr. Kelley was very close to his wife's family, George and Emma Beal, and their children Clinton "Buddy" Beal, Arnold Beal, Alfreda Beal Libby, Ernestine Beal Alley, who are all deceased, leaving his wife Etta and her sister Iona Beal Woodward as the sole survivors. In addition, he leaves behind three close nephews, Ray and Dana Beal and George Woodward, and his special neighbor Arden Alley.

Uncle Shirl will be remembered by all those that had the pleasure of meeting him, enjoying his good humor, listening to him sing in the church choir, or if you were fortunate, you had some of his lobster stew and or clam chowder. Most of all, he will be remembered for the love and joy he had for his family. He will be sadly missed.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Services will be performed by the Rev. George L. Woodward and Pastor David York at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at the Chelsea Adventist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beals Advent Christian Church, Beals, ME 04611; or Chelsea Advent Christian Church, c/o Donna Whitaker, 65 Longwood Ave., Augusta, ME 04330.

ETTA, YOU MUST KNOW HOW SPECIAL YOU AND SHIRLEY HAVE BEEN TO ME EVER SINCE OCT. 31ST, 1954 WHEN SHIRLEY FRENCH AND I, THEN ETTA CHANDLER, MARRIED. YOU USED TO PARK YOUR BUICK ON THE BACKYARD OF THE ALLEYS' WHO LIVED ADJOINED TO OUR HOUSE, GEORGE AND ALICE CHANDLER, WHOM SHIRLEY K. BECAME ONE OF THE FISHERMEN ON THE SEINER, "THE BURLEIGH," NAMED AFTER MY ONLY BROTHER WHO JUST PASSED WAY ON DEC. 20, 2008. FROM THE VERY FIRST CHRISTMAS AFTER MY SHIRLEY AND I WERE MARRIED ON OCT. 31ST, 1954, I SENT YOU AND YOUR SHIRLEY A CHRISTMAS CARD, TO SHIRLEY AND ETTA FROM SHIRLEY AND ETTA. YOU ANSWERED OUR CARD AND WE CONTINUED THIS UNTIL WE HAD OUR FIRST BABY AND THEN THE CYCLE WAS BROKEN BY THE LITTLE ADDITION MAKING THE DIFFERENCE OF THE TWO, SHIRLEYS' AND, ETTAS'. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SPECIAL TO ME, ETTA AND I HAVE MISSED SEEING YOU AT THE POST OFFICE WHEN WE USED TO SAY TO EACH OTHER, "HELLO, ETTA". WE ARE SADDENED OF HEARING THE NEWS OF SHIRLEY'S PASSSING AND KNOW HOW LONELY YOU WILL BE, FROM THE PASSING OF MY SHIRLEY, 34 YEARS AGO, NOW WHEN HE WAS ONLY 46 AND I WAS JUST 39. SO, WE THANK GOD FOR ALL THOSE 74 WONDERFUL YEARS YOU TWO HAD IN MARRIAGE AND AS "BEST FRIENDS." PRAYERFULLY, "ETTA."

J. Merchant & J. Merchant Jr. and Famiiles,

All Is Well

I am the wind...
I am the rain...
I am the sunlight...through your windowpane.
I am the leaf...turning brown in the fall.
I am the faintest whisper... on the breeze when you call.
I am the snowflake...that kisses your cheek.
I'm the child in the park...playing hide n' seek.
I'm the scent of the flowers...that fills the spring air
I'm all around you...I'm everywhere.
I'll always be with you...from this moment on.
In your every dance...your every song.
You see when we move on...we never truly die.
We become one with nature...we unify.
Take care my precious ones...on my passing dont dwell.
Remember the love we shared together...See you again soon.

Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.

Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. Our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow.

Aunt Etta and Family,

I still have my little wood rocking chair that Uncle Shirl made me. I knew I was officially adopted when I received that gift shortly after I made the move to the Beals Advent Christian Church. I knew when you both hugged me and told me you were happy to see me that you meant it from the heart and it meant so much to me. Uncle Shirl left a great legacy behind at the church at Beals. Even though I have been away for almost 15 years now, I still fondly remember the years I spent there. When Benita called last night to tell me Uncle Shirl had passed away, she was crying. You have to know what a huge place you both hold in all our hearts but especially in the hearts of Benita and Raymond. Though this is hard right now, just think of all the wonderful visits we will have in Heaven! Love and prayers,
