Sally Carroll Fowler CUMBERLAND FORESIDE -- Sally Carroll Holt Fowler passed away in the early morning hours of Feb. 28, 2009, at her home at Piper Shores in Scarborough, after a brief illness. Sally was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 19, 1920, to Benjamin and Nancy Payson Holt. At a young age she moved with her family to New York City. She attended The Brearley School and received her bachelor of arts degree from Smith College in 1943. Her family had deep ties to Maine, and she spent summers in Falmouth. Maine is also where she met her husband of 60 years, Sandy Fowler, and where they decided to settle and raise a family. They lived for 58 years in an 1800 red farm house on Cumberland Foreside. She loved to sail with Sandy. Together, over many years and in many boats, they explored the Atlantic coast from the Bahamas to Newfoundland. She loved the city of Portland and was devoted to many civic causes. She rejoiced in the revitalization of the Old Port area and Portland's emergence as a home of choice for young people, as it had been for her and Sandy. Throughout her life she was an active volunteer in the community, serving as a trustee of the Portland Museum of Art and of the Maine Medical Center. She was also a faithful and prominent member of the congregation of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Falmouth, becoming one of the first women in Maine to serve as Senior Warden of a parish and the first woman to serve on the vestry of her parish. She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander R. Fowler. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her children, Anne Fowler, Win Fowler, Ben Fowler, Ellen Fowler, Susan Fowler Valaitis; their spouses; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral service was held at The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Falmouth on Friday, March 6. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to: The Maine Audubon Society 20 Gilsland Farm Rd.
