Jean Johnson Obituary

Jean Rooney Johnson, 85 PORTLAND -- Jean Rooney Johnson, 85, of Portland, passed away at Cedars Nursing Care Center on Saturday, March 7, 2009, following a long illness. Jean was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 17, 1923, the daughter of Edwin and Madeline (Snow) Rooney. She graduated from the Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and attended Bradford Junior College. Jean was a proud member of the United States Citizens Defense Corps and the Massachusetts Women's Defense Corps during World War II. She served as a Nurse's Aide and a Mobile Canteen Volunteer with the Boston Metropolitan Chapter of the American National Red Cross. Jean married Hamilton Searight Johnson in 1955 and lived in New York City for more than 30 years. She had a passion for gardening and animals and realized a life long dream of owning her own home when she moved to Gorham in 1991. Jean is survived by her sons, Tim and his wife Janet Johnson of Portland, and Hamilton Johnson Jr. of Bridgehampton, N.Y. and his fiancée Kate Reutershan of Sag Harbor, N.Y.; and her brother David Rooney of New York City. In addition to her parents, Jean is predeceased by her husband of 30 years and her brothers, Peter and Edwin Rooney. An hour of visitation will be held at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland at 3 until 4 on March 11, 2009, with a memorial service immediately following visitation.
