Donald Smith Obituary

Donald II. Smith, 87 POWNAL -- Donald H. Smith, 87, of Pownal, died on Monday, March 9, 2009, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. He was born in Millinocket on Sept. 15, 1921, to Clara Henry and Ray F. Smith. He grew up in Yarmouth and lived the last 60 years of his life in Pownal. He worked at Royal River Packing Co. in Yarmouth as a machinist retiring after 40 years. He was a veteran of WWII landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a member of the 197th AAA B Battery. He also participated in battles and campaigns in Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. He enjoyed his yearly reunions with his buddies through the years, and made trips to England, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. He loved going camping with his family to Kokajo and the Moosehead Lake area, taking his girls fishing and spending most of the time putting the worms on the hook and taking the fish off for them. He enjoyed going to camp in Orient, bunting with the guys, playing cribbage with Tom, and grandchildren. He was member of Improved Order of Redmen #37 Wescustago Tribe and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Yarmouth, and American Legion of Yarmouth. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Arlene Golding Smith; four daughters, Linda Quinn and Les of Nashua, N.H., Lorraine Merrill, Cheryl and Craig Vosmus of Pownal and Deborah and Michael Murphy of South Portland; nine grandchildren, Donald and his wife Rae, Al Vosmus, Neil and his wife Beth, Amy Tozier, Gregory and his wife Beth, Lance and his wife Jessica Merrill, Lori and her husband Mike Palmer and Mike and Jami Murphy; 12 great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Julia, Isaiah, Christopher, Brenna Addison, Dylan, Cory, Alicia, Madeleine, Avery, Ella and Henry which he enjoyed giving rides on his gator. He is also survived by siblings Helen Maxell of Yarmouth, Ruth Douglass of Alfred, Ray Smith of New York, and George Smith of Lisbon Falls; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Rd., Gray. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at First Parish Congregational Church, 422 Hallowell Rd., Pownal. Arrangements under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
