My Mother told me about Charlie last night. I am Jack O'Neill's Grandaughter. As you might know his sister Agnes was a great friend of my grandfather. They luckily have all lived a very full and long life!

About 3 years ago I first had the chance to play pool with Charlie while visiting my father-in-law (John Kirschman). Charlie was a very competitive and masterful player who bested me. It was amazing. Afterwards he treated me to a discussion of his life's work. He was sharp, funny and charming.

My wife and I are scientists who used to work with yeast. When Charlie heard this he gave us a picture book of different yeasts that he encountered and used as a Brewmaster. The book has a place of honor in our bookshelf.

Uncle Charlie was always so special to us. His intellect, keen wit and affability will be sorely missed. He was truly a "Man for All Seasons". God rest his soul.

I will never forget my dear friend Charlie. He and my Bill (Bill Howell) were very close during Bill's final years at Luther Crest, and Charlie always included me among his closest acquaintances here. Every member of my family who met him has asked about him repeatedly. He was a most exceptional man, an artist, a poet, an intellectual, yet "a regular guy" who made everyone feel special. The world was made better for his presence in it. I'll miss him.

My wife and I were always entertained and impressed by Charlie's quick wit and unmatched enthusiasm for living life to its fullest. He had accomplished so much and traveled to so many places, and yet he always maintained a sense of modesty that playfully bordered on cynicism. Words like charming, selfless, caring, and generous don't do enough to describe him--he was just fun to be around. Charlie was a unique individual who will never be forgotten in our hearts.

Charlie was a wonderful man -- smart, funny, multitalented, kind -- you quickly run out of superlatives. I'll remember him fondly as someone who enjoyed life and made sure that those around him did too.

My deepest sympathy on the your loss your loved one. I had the privilege of meeting "Old Charlie" when visiting my parents at Luther Crest. He was so engaging and witty and a joy to be around (not to mention an awesome pool player!) I know his many friends there will miss him greatly, and I am blessed to have been in his company -- if only for a few short periods of time.

Sincerely,
Cindy Bowers
