Donald Nivling Obituary

MONTEREY - Donald L. Nivling, 56, known to many Monterey Bay residents as "Captain Con-nector," passed away suddenly on January 19, 2009.
Born October 19, 1952, in Maine, Mr. Nivling lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia until his teens, when his family moved to Northern California. He was a resident of Monterey from 1994 until his death.
He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 13 years, of Monterey, and a younger brother, Clifford, who resides back east.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no memorial service. Contributions preferred to the SPCA or any local animal shelter.

I was shocked to read that Don had died. He was a good friend through high school and for years afterward. He was always into show biz one way or another, usually as a behind the scenes technician though occasionally as a performer. In his hall of fame was a surprise, full scale performance impersonating Elvis Presley at our high school. It was brilliant. Later, he ran the control board on Saturday mornings at Berkeley radio station KPFA. He also worked behind the camera, and at least once in front, producing films of a certain genre. He was a performer, a fixit man, a romantic, and a very good friend. Rest well, Don.

Don Nivling a friend that was like a brother, Don a man who knew odds and ends of just about anything . I remember being a sales person and Don having the secret weapond the Best Kong Fu he sold 5 big screen in one day. He will be missed.

Don was a terrific co-worker and one of my best friends. His depth of cultural knowledge spanned everything from the worst B-grade horror movies to the finer details of classical music. Best of all his alter-ego "Captain Connector" showed me how to create a champagne quality home theater on a beer budget (his words). Don was a good man and I will miss him very much.
