Darrell Ward (1964 - 2016)

Darrell Ward, a truck driver who starred on the reality show “Ice Road Truckers,” died Aug. 28, 2016, in a plane crash, according to multiple news sources. He was 52.

“It’s with great sadness to report we have lost our Montana Legend at the young age of 52,” according to a news release posted on Ward’s official Facebook page.

KPAX Channel 8 in Missoula, Montana, reported that two people were killed when a Cessna 182 plane crashed while making an approach to a private airstrip near Rock Creek. Ward had just left a truck show in Dallas, Texas. He was en route to Missoula to shoot a documentary-like show about the recovery of plane wrecks, according to the news release.

Ward became famous on the History Channel show that follows intrepid truckers as they drive heavily loaded semis across frozen lakes to deliver cargo to remote areas in Alaska and Canada. He appeared in dozens of episodes since 2012. According to the news release, Ward had just finished filming season 10 earlier this year.

“Trucking has always been a large part of Darrell’s life; from running the harvest rigs with his grandparents and family, to driving trucks from Montana to Alaska and all roads in between. … His motto, ‘ANY ROAD, ANY LOAD,’ fits his personality perfectly,” the release said.
