Eddie Applegate (1935 - 2016)

Eddie Applegate, the actor who played Richard, the boyfriend of Patty, on “The Patty Duke Show,” has died, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 81.

Applegate’s friend, Lizzie Maxwell, told The Hollywood Reporter that Applegate died at a nursing home in Los Angeles after a long illness.

Applegate starred on the popular sitcom “The Patty Duke Show,” which aired on ABC from 1963 until 1966. He dated Patty, the Brooklyn teenager who was played by Patty Duke. Duke also played an identical cousin, Cathy Lane, on the series.

In a 1999 reunion show, “The Patty Duke Show: Still Rockin' in Brooklyn Heights,” Applegate reprised his role as Richard, who was now Patty Lane's ex-husband.

Applegate also appeared on other popular television shows including “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” The Lucy Show,” and “Gunsmoke.”

More recently, he played Emma Stone’s grandfather in the 2010 movie “Easy A.”

After his acting career started to decline, Applegate took up painting and became an artist.

He is survived by two children, Heather and Michael, and six grandchildren.
