Joan Lee

Joan Lee, the wife of Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee for 69-plus years, has died, according to multiple news sources. She was 93.

A representative for Stan Lee and his family confirmed that she died Thursday, July 6, 2017, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I can confirm the sad news that Joan Lee passed away this morning quietly and surrounded by her family,” the statement reads, noting that members of her family “ask that you please give them time to grieve and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Joan Lee reportedly had a stroke earlier in the week and was hospitalized.

The couple were married Dec. 5, 1947, and would have celebrated their 70th anniversary this year. They had two children, Joan, who was born in 1950, and Jan, who died shortly after her birth in 1953.

Joan Lee was a British hat model when she met Stan Lee. Stan Lee told The Hollywood Reporter in a story last year that he met his wife when he went to the hat store to ask out another woman but met Joan instead.

In 1987, Joan Lee wrote a novel called “The Pleasure Palace.”
