Jerry Dewitt Leggett

Mr. Jerry Dewitt Leggett died Monday, March 2, 2009 in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Leggett was born October 23, 1926 in Washington, NC Beaufort County, the son of the late Richard Ralph and Mae Langley Leggett. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Ralph Leggett, Jr.
He was a retired structural engineer.
Following graduation from Washington High School, he enlisted in the Army Corps and served during World War II. While in the service he attended Davidson College and after being discharged he attended North Carolina State University and subsequently received a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career with Peden Steel Company in Raleigh, and after moving to Fayetteville was associated with Hercules Steel before joining Huske-Leggett and Associates as a consulting engineer.
Mr. Leggett served as past president of the Fayetteville Lions Club and treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville for many years. His love for his church was demonstrated by his many areas of service. He was a lifetime Deacon, and over the years served as moderator of the Board of Deacons, chaired the Building and Grounds Committee and was a member of the Men's Bible Sunday School Class. His hobbies were gardening and "building".
Mr. Leggett is survived by his wife, Helen, of Fayetteville; and a daughter, Kimberly Leggett of Graham, NC. He was a devoted husband and father, and was much loved by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at First Baptist Church, 201 Anderson Street with the Rev. Ed Beddingfield officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service in Lafayette Memorial Park.
