Gilbert Spencer Obituary

MARCH 16, 1936 - MARCH 2, 2009
Gilbert E. "Gil" Spencer, 72, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2009, after his courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 16, 1936 in Fairview Park, OH, he was the oldest of the four children of Edgar and Arlene Spencer. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in the Winnebago club and reconnecting with his shipmates from the USS Bennington.
Gil joined the Navy in 1954, which led him to many cities. In 1979, he moved his family to Raleigh and started G & M Painting of which he was the owner for 30 years.
Gil was a great family man and loved being with his two grandchildren. He especially enjoyed playing baseball, cards, reading and camping with them. A generous and caring person, he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and shipmates.
A celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Apex. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Left to cherish his memory are: his wife of 50 years, Mary Spencer; children, Michael Spencer and life partner, Richard Page, Laurie Webster and husband, Kevin, Dale Spencer and wife, Toni; his sister, Lynette Hissong and husband, Kenny; brothers, Bill Spencer and wife, Sandy, Wayne Spencer and wife, Nancy; grandchildren, Dale Wayne Spencer, Jr. and Mary Samantha "Sammie" Spencer.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Bryan- Lee Funeral Home in Garner.
As were Gil's wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made c/o Laurie Webster, 743 Contender Drive, Clayton, NC 27520, for a college trust fund to be established for the grandchildren, Dale Wayne Spencer, Jr. and Mary Samantha "Sammie" Spencer.
