Dear Gerturde -

when Gil called with the news of Gus' passing, so many memories flooded through my mind of the many years we were next-door neighbors, and beyond - I will never forget the many kindnesses that he (and you) showed to me and to my sons, and even to Jolie who he made sure was always supplied with meaty bones! - my thoughts and prayers are with you and your children, to whom I wish only good and happy memories of a wonderful man - we're going to miss Gus, and will never forget him -

Love, Miriam

One of my favorite lines in any book I've read is found at the end of "All the King's Men." The narrator says that he is "the son of a million fathers." Dr. Capers has always been a father to me. The power in his eyes and the thunder of his laugh are qualities of his I've told my children about. Our world has lost a wonderful man today. Thank you for so much, Dr. Capers; my memories of you will never disappear.
