Art Aragon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 26, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Art Aragon, boxing's original "Golden Boy," who never won a world title but was one of boxing's biggest drawing cards of the 1940s and 1950s, has died at age 80.

Aragon died Tuesday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Christina Zicklin said.

He suffered a stroke on March 15 and was removed from life support, his son, Brad, told the Los Angeles Times. Zicklin said she could not confirm those details, citing privacy laws.

Aragon lost his only world title fight to lightweight champion James Carter in 1951. Aragon, who struggled to make his weight class throughout his career, said afterward he was weak from having to lose seven pounds in the days before the fight.

"I was the only fighter they ever carried into the ring, I was so weak," he said in 2006 when he was inducted into the California Boxing Association Hall of Fame.

Aragon finished with a 90-20-6 record, including 61 wins by knockout. He fought several stars of the era like Tommy Campbell, Jesse Flores and Carmen Basilio, who knocked him down after eight brutal rounds in 1958.

Born in Belen, N.M., the fighter grew up in East Los Angeles and began boxing in 1942. His first recorded professional fight was in 1944.

Flamboyant both in and out of the ring, Aragon wore a gold robe and trunks and reveled in playing the villain. Often he would taunt a crowd into booing him, sometimes thumbing his nose at the audience after defeating a popular opponent.

"You ever get booed by 10,000 people? It's exciting," he once said.

He was equally colorful outside the ring, golfing with Bob Hope and counting as friends Marilyn Monroe and William Holden. He was married four times and had a high-profile romance with actress Mamie Van Doren.

"The 'Golden Boy' was a perfect title for him," Van Doren told the Times. "His smile turned everyone on. His skin was golden. His floppy hair bounced so perfectly. He was just so sexy."

His career, however, was marred by allegations that at least some of his fights were fixed. In 1956 he was convicted of offering a $500 bribe to welterweight Dick Goldstein to take a dive in a Texas fight, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.

Los Angeles sportswriters gave Aragon the nickname "Golden Boy" - later applied to boxer Oscar De La Hoya - in reference to the 1939 movie of that name that starred Holden as a prizefighter.

Aragon himself appeared in several small movie and television roles, including the 1955 film "To Hell and Back" with Audie Murphy.

After retiring from the ring in 1960, he became a bail bondsman.

In addition to Brad, Aragon is survived by his children Georgian, Audie, Mindy and Nancy, and four grandchildren. Another son, Art Jr., died in a motorcycle accident.

Art Aragon ushered in boxing on television....He gave the bad guys someone to root for and if Art was going to be on television I was going to watch him...win, lose, or draw art, was a champion, a man put on the planet to love life and what it had to offer...

Art with such a great friend to my family and especially to my dad Eric Baca. It was always like a celebrity was in town when Art came. He was often interviewed by the local media here in Albuquerque. He was so much fun and so funny and so inappropriate which made him even more funny. Now I'm closest friends with his daughter Georgie. Love to everybody and may we all have people like our Aragon in our lives. Alexia Baca Morgan

Art Aragon was my mother, Abelina Aragon's 2nd cousin, my grandfather, Clemente Aragon's 1st cousin. Although I have never met anyone on that side of the family, I remember Art being talked about and great pride in our family when we'd manage to catch a small glimpse of him in a movie or hear his name. My condolences to his children and their families, my distant family, and even tho we've never met, love and prayers go out your way. The Lord Bless and keep you all.

I hope the family and friends can find comfort in the scripture at Revelatiom 21:4 where it states that one day God will wipe out all tears from our eyes and death will be no more. We look forward to that wonderful time.

August 30, 2010

To the family: May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Golden Boy,

I am thinking of you today and trying to learn more about you. You grew up living very close to my father in Belen, New Mexico. Every time I'd go to visit, he would take me by the lot of your childhood home and point and say..."That's where the Golden Boy lived. He was a famous boxer." As we drove around those old Belen roads, I always knew when we were getting close. Your old home town is very full of interesting history. My prayers are with your family...Your life will be celebrated eternally.

God Bless,

April 2, 2010

For Art...in the fifties
you were the biggest boxing
draw ever.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I was fortunate to visit Art at his bail bonds office years ago. He autographed a program I had from a fight with Cisco Andrades. Art loved fans and spent an hour with me talking about boxing. We later went to lunch a few times. He was a great PR man for the sport of boxing.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I used to spar with Artie at the Legion Stadium in Hollywood in the '50s. He was a great guy, who went out of his way to show you punches, like his left hook to the body, followed with a hook to the head. After the Basilio fight I asked him what happened. He said,"I made two mistakes. The first was signing the contract, and the second was getting up after I was knocked down the first time.
Bless you Artie. We'll miss you, but, of course, you'll always be in our memories.

I am so grateful I got to meet you when I visited my sister, Sue, who looked after you your last years, I could tell how deeply you cared for each other. She always talked about your wonderful, colorful personality and your tender heart, and I was glad I got a chance to see it first hand. You truly enjoyed life and brought joy to those who were fortunate enough to know you.

I have very fond memories of sitting on Art's lap as a 2 and 3 year old in Aliso Village, LA. Ca. At the time I had a special crush on him because he was so caring and funny. When he would visit his sister in the village, she would make fresh tortillas and he would always manage to 'slip' me one. The Gaddie family loved (and still do) him dearly.
The next time in L.A. I was planning on visiting him to see if he would remember me from 'way back then'.
So sorry that can not happen now.
My condolences to all of his family, he will be remembered with love.

Remembering as a little girl, my Daddy loved boxing and he would talk about Art Aragon, 'The Golden Boy'. Little did I know when I grew up, I would meet Georgian, who later introduced me to the 'colorful' character! I know, Georgian, you adored him. Time for your Dad to rest. May the good memories comfort you and your family in this time of sorrow. You are in my thoughts.
