Daniel Parmenter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 15, 2008.
We invite you to share condolences for Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester, Illinois, who was killed in the Northern Illinois University shooting in DeKalb, Illinois, on February 14, 2008.

Daniel "Danny" Parmenter was the kind of person who was always helping others out. He was always offering people rides to class, helping friends with homework or doing community service, said Pi Kappa Alpha chapter president Jason Garcia.

The 20-year-old sophomore from Westchester was studying finance at NIU, and sold ads for the campus newspaper. The paper's adviser, Maria Krull, described him as a "gentle giant."

The last time she saw him, he was stretched out on "an old beat-up couch" in the newspaper's offices. She teased him about having his feet on the furniture. "I said, 'Danny, you know better than that.'"

"The thing about Danny was, if he was in the office and I needed something done, I just had to mention it to him and he would do it," Krull said. "I knew I didn't have to worry."

“For here I am creating new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be called to mind, neither will they come up into the heart." Isaiah 65:17. Comforting words to help us appreciate God's willingness to rectify our losses, allay our fears, and diminish evil acts of any kind here to come forever.

Daniel did such a courageous act in taking his own life to save another. That's definitely an act that will forever be remembered. May Daniel's parents be proud of their son; for they raised an amazing MAN. I wish I knew him, and unfortunately with his tragic passing, I now feel like I do. There's nothing you need to say about a hero because their legacy lives on forever. Daniel deserves to be remembered and I know he is every second of every day.

God Bless his family and every one who knew him.

My heart goes out to the Parmeter family. My daughter also underwent surgery for a heart defect, so I am familiar with the feeling of how precious each day with Daniel must have been, only to end in this frightening way. I hope that his family gets the justice that they deserve.

Horrible and unspeakable Deja Vu. I cannot believe it happened again. There are no words to express my sorrow and grief. My heart and prayers are going up to the victims' families and their friends. Nothing like this should happen to anyone at any point of life. I am divested and hope that all children will go through that and carry out with their lives but always remember what happen at their school and all who got affected by that.

We don't often hear of these tragically beautiful things that people do for those they love; I am humbled and thankful that there are people like you still around.

You are an inspiration to the world, and my thoughts and condolences go out to your family, girlfriend and friends... it seems you were a wonderful person and loved by many. Rest in peace.

Daniel,

It's hard for me to try and find the right words to say right now. My heart is breaking and I'm trying to hold back the tears. My cousin, Lauren, died in the Columbine shooting of 1999. I think of her often. She was a brilliant student with a big future in front of her. Her life ended too soon. School shootings outrage me. I am a senior in college and to this day, I fear this very thing happening at any given moment. And so I can sympathize, and I can feel and relate to the pain your family and friends must be going through right now. Sometimes, it hard to understand why these things happen to such innocent people. It's a tragedy. But you are a hero and an angel. I'm inspired by your love and devotion. Your girlfriend will forever remember the love you had for her and be thankful to you. You will always be remembered. I'll be praying for your family. May God comfort your friends, family, and community during this difficult time. We remember Columbine. And now we remember NIU. Rest in peace with your father Daniel.

February 16, 2012

Rest in Peace. You inspire us all. You made the ultimate sacrifice, and for you. I don't believe it's over. You'll live on in all our hearts and minds.

I just heard about this, and have to say that I was truly touched by this. What a horrible thing to happen, but what an amazing heart you had. You saved a life, and you have now touched hundreds, if not thousands by your selfless actions. I read you even called your mother right before it happened, and I hope this fact can cause a little more peace with your family. You are a courageous, kind spirit, and that is how you will be remembered everywhere. Rest in Peace.

I am greatly appreciative that in the year 2012 Daniel's story is still being told and is honestly amazing every time I read it. It always brings tears to my eyes and knowing that there are still people in this world willing to sacrifice their life for the sake of others makes me believe there is still hope for people in today's world. I certainly hope Daniel's story continues to touch lives of today, tomorrow, and many days to come.

Danny,
To this day I still talk about what an incredible influence you had, and still have, on my life. Not a day goes by where I don't think of you. Being such a great friend of mine has made it tough for me to cope with losing you but I know you would want me to remember your life, not how it was taken. Man, whenever I come across a conflict in my life I always think to myself.... What would Dan have done? I should get a W.W.D.D. bracelet. Haha you've helped me more times then Im willing to admit so don't get all cocky about it when I see you again. When its my time to go I hope that I can look in the mirror and say to myself, "You were a tenth of the man Dan was." If I can then I will have surpassed almost every man whoever walked the earth. Its beyond me how you were able to accomplish 10 times more in 20 years then i hope to accomplish in a lifetime. But that's what made you, you. You touched many lives buddy. I am so honored to have had such a great friendship with you for as long as we did. Not only did your family and friends lose something special that day, the world did, they just didn't get the opportunity to know why. They say the world doesn't stop for anyone. Had you been able to live out your life I am absolutely positive the world would have come grinding to a halt.... I just wish that the world would have been given that opportunity.
I miss you Danny.... i miss you.

I watched today as the Parmenter family lay a wreath on the memorial to their son, the second anniversary of their loss. When I saw his name in the news I prayed it wasn't your son, then I saw his picture and there was no doubt since he looks so much like you. My heart breaks for you. A mother should never have to feel the pain you must be feeling. After reading so much about him, I know you must be so proud of the beautiful, respectful young man you raised. Dear Daniel Parmenster parents and family.

As a mother of five with a son and daughter still at home and going to college, it worries me. We send our kids to get a better education so they can be successful in life, not knowing what's out there, we think is a safe place, but the reality is that we live in a world that has many challenges, including the unknown. There are no words that would ease your pain right now, but time would make it easier. I lost a newborn baby boy long ago and know the pain of losing a child. We lose our parents, spouse but there is nothing more painful than losing a child. Know that I would be praying for you to have comfort on this trying time for you. Our Lord would help you...

Vaya con Dios Daniel...

I worked with Dan at Pottery Barn for the last 2 years and spoke with him the weekend before this horrific event. He called on Saturday to say he wasn't feeling well and I said not to worry about it-just to get well. He said he didn't want to get any one else sick. He was always so thoughtful. We always knew that when Dan worked, we could face whatever came at us for the day. He could load a 250 lb dining table with no trouble. He was always so willing to pitch in help out. Thank you, Linda, for instilling in him such a tremendous work ethic-he was a real joy to work with. I will miss his gentle spirit and kind heart.
