Donna Summer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2012.
NEW YORK (AP) - Disco queen Donna Summer, whose pulsing anthems such as "Last Dance," ''Love to Love You Baby" and "Bad Girls" became the soundtrack for a glittery age of sex, drugs, dance and flashy clothes, has died. She was 63.

Her family released a statement saying Summer died Thursday morning and that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy."

The family did not disclose the cause of death. She had been living in Englewood, Fla., with her husband Bruce Sudano.

"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time," the statement said.

Summer came to prominence just as disco was burgeoning, and came to define the era with a string of No. 1 hits and her luxurious hair and glossy, open lips.

Disco became as much defined by her sultry, sexual vocals - her bedroom moans and sighs - as the relentless, pulsing rhythms of the music itself.

Elton John said in a statement that Summer was more than the Queen of Disco.

"Her records sound as good today as they ever did. That she has never been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted," he said. "She is a great friend to me and to the Elton John AIDS Foundation and I will miss her greatly."

"Love to Love You Baby," with its erotic moans, was Summer's first hit and one of the most scandalous songs of the polyester-and-platform-heel era. The song was later sampled by LL Cool J, Timbaland and Beyonce, who interpolated the hit for her jam "Naughty Girl."

Unlike some other stars of disco who faded as the music became less popular, Summer was able to grow beyond it and later segued to a pop-rock sound. She had one of her biggest hits in the 1980s with "She Works Hard for the Money," which became another anthem, this time for women's rights.

Soon after, Summer became a born-again Christian and faced controversy when she was accused of making anti-gay comments in relation to the AIDS epidemic. Summer denied making the comments, but was the target of a boycott.

Religion played an important role in her life in later years, said Michael Levine, who briefly worked as her publicist.

"She was very committed to God, spirituality and religion. Her passion in her life, besides music, was God, spirituality and religion. She held a bible study class at her home every week," he said.

Summer, real name LaDonna Adrian Gaines, was born in 1948 in Boston. She was raised on gospel music and became the soloist in her church choir by age 10.

"There was no question I would be a singer, I just always knew. I had credit in my neighborhood, people would lend me money and tell me to pay it back when I got famous," Summer said in a 1989 interview with The Associated Press.

"Love to Love You Baby," released in 1975, was h er U.S. chart debut and the first of 19 No. 1 dance hits between 1975 and 2008 - second only to Madonna.

The song was a breakthrough hit for Summer and for disco - a legend of studio ecstasy and the genre's ultimate sexual anthem.

Summer came up with the idea of the song and first recorded it as a demo in 1975, on the condition that another singer perform it commercially. But Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart liked the track so much that he suggested to producer Giorgio Morodor they re-record it, and make it longer - what would come to be known as a "disco disc."

Summer had reservations about the lyrics - "Do it to me again and again" - but imagined herself as a movie star playing a part. So she agreed to sing, lying down on the studio floor, in darkness, and letting her imagination take over. Solo and multitracked, she whispered, she groaned, she crooned. Drums, bass, strings and keyboards answered her cries. She simulated climax so many times that t he BBC kept count: 23, in 17 minutes.

Through the rest of the disco era she burned up the charts: She was the only artist to have three consecutive double-LPs hit No. 1, "Live and More," ''Bad Girls" and "On the Radio." She was also the first female artist with four No. 1 singles in a 13-month period, according to the Rock Hall of Fame, where she was a nominee this year but was passed over.

She was never comfortable with the "Disco Queen" label. Musically, she began to change in 1979 with "Hot Stuff," which had a tough, rock 'n' roll beat. Her diverse sound helped her earn Grammy Awards in the dance, rock, R&B and inspirational categories.

Summer said grew up on rock 'n' roll and later covered the Bruce Springsteen song "Protection."

"I like the Moody Blues, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as well as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, the Supremes and Temptations," she said. "I didn't know many white kids who didn't know the Supremes; I don't know many black kids who don't know the Moody Blues."

Warwick said in a statement that she was sad to lose a great performer and "dear friend."

"My heart goes out to her husband and her children," Warwick said. "Prayers will be said to keep them strong."

Musician Nile Rodgers tweeted: "For the last half hour or so I've been lying in my bed crying and stunned. Donna Summer RIP."

Summer released her last album, "Crayons," in 2008. It was her first full studio album in 17 years. She also performed on "American Idol" that year with its top female contestants.

Even as disco went out of fashion, she remained a fixture in dance clubs, endlessly sampled and remixed. Her music has also been sampled by the Pussycat Dolls and rapper Nas.

In a sign of her continued relevance, the Broadway musical "Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Musical," features two versions of Summer songs with "Hot Stuff" and "MacArthur Park."

"It's a tragedy to lose an icon a t such a young age," actor and singer Nick Adams, who plays Adam in the show, said in an email.

What can I say, except to echo everyone else's words of loss and missing the late great DONNA SUMMER(RIP) I have been a fan of Miss Summer since the early age of 14 way back in 1976 when I first heard the Four Seasons Of Love album a friend of mine used to bring over to another friends house. My first words were "WHO IS THAT SINGING!?" Since that very moment, my spirit and soul were awoken by the awesome DONNA SUMMER!

I attended every show I could when she was in L.A. & Las Vegas, and I was very fortunate to meet her mom, dad, sisters, her kids, her husband, and go back-stage after concert shows, I was at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, and again I had the chance to chat with Donna again and again before and after that event. I feel so very blessed to have gotten to know her even if it was for short times in my life with the great Donna Summer, but I will never forget her, and I miss her like everyone else who as a fan, and who loved her dearly.

Donna was a lovely sweet and kind woman to all, & as she was to me always! I am so grateful to have known you Donna Summer, and I know that I will see you again in the afterlife once we all leave the life we have here on this earth. GOD Almighty have you in HIS mercy, care, and peace, & love. I will always love you, dearest Donna! Sincerely, your fan forever as long as I live...

Remembering QUEEN Donna Summer and her upcoming 67th birthday on 12/31/2015. I always listen to her wonderful songs. Heard the countdown, from 1979, this weekend on satellite radio and many of her stellar songs from that year from her Live & More, Bad Girls and Greatest Hits-On The Radio albums. What great memories, of 1979, from this classy & talented lady!! She'll always live on through her music and via film & pictures featuring her.

Donna Summer - The Lady of Talent, Beauty, Class & Style

DEE

May 17, 2013

May 17, 2013

It was a year ago, today, in which the world lost a true treasure when the Queen, Donna Summer, passed away. In remembrance of her extraordinary singing talent and a lady who had beauty, class, style and great stage presence. These younger female singers should look to you, as an example, because you were the real deal! You were also a smart business woman and handled your business wisely and effectively. Show business is not only about talent and you recognized how important the other side of it was, as well. I am glad the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is honoring you this month. I only wish you were here to be able to accept it (Lord knows I voted so many times for you to be inducted into it). However, I know you are beaming with joy, as your fans are, too. I am so glad I got to see you in concert live, back in 2008. What an awesome performance! You were not only a great singer/entertainer but also a caring & loving mother, wife, relative, friend, etc. I have been a fan since I was a child and will always be one. I listen to your music all the time and your music shall endure for eternity. I saw a couple of shows recently which showcased the Disco era. Let's be very clear....Donna Summer is the ONLY Queen of Disco and there is no other that shall ever hold this title!! She was a global sensation who helped usher Disco onto the radio stations and into nightclubs because of the demand for her recordings and live appearances all over the world. No other female shall ever upstage her role during the Disco era.......bar none! Rest in Peace, Queen, and you will forever be missed.

She was not a influence on drugs and sex... She was an influence with passion and elegance with unique style and professionalism. The most sensual singer of all time with symphony disco (with orchestra); awesome with powerful range of voice with unforgettable inspirational performances with talent and class. She started with rock & roll ("Pandora's box" "Lady of the Night" "Love's Unkind"), euro-disco opera, Latin-caribbean dance ("Try me I Know We can Make it" Autumn Changes" "Come with Me" "Deep Inside") blues ("Remember Yesterday", "Black Lady") soul, opera, soft adult contemporanean ("Whispering Waves" "Winter Melody" more..) Broadway and jazz ("My Man" "Memories" "Lush Life" more...) and later on with rock/alternative/new wave/soft rock quiet storm/synch-pop/country/ pop and much more (all of these for an African euro-American lady); and her 1st electronic music influences ("I Feel Love")and the 1st (only ones 1975-1980)long album versions (mixed songs). Her public appearances had so much passion and "love was the Healer" for her audience; Always, her role modeling has being for many divas and will be for many "modern singers and bands" of today.

Mr. Sudano:

Donna Summer was my hero - having overcome so much and possessed the most out of this world singing talent!

But, my favorite part about who she is is about you all, your early years together and the marriage that lasted in a world where marriages do not last.

I just wanted to send you my heartfelt condolences a few months after she passed, knowing that so many surround you initially but few remember to love on you after the first weeks have passed.

Donna was a huge inspiration to me, and her salvation story is mine - living so many years feeling guilty and worthless, at least to God anyway, and then the light bulb goes off. I praise God that the person of Donna Summer and the voice that was unmistakable and irresistible sings with the choirs in heaven today!

God bless you, and God bless your family as you continue to grieve the loss of the physical presence of such a grand lady!

As a professional bass player here in the UK for whom Ms Summer's work had a seismic effect on a young session musician - from the utterly original and ground breaking 'I Feel Love', through to the brilliance and sophistication of her album with Quincy Jones, her body of work will remain as fresh and compelling decades from now, an achievement current so called pop stars can only dream of. As with other artists like the Bee Gees, we will never see their like again. Like many I was privileged to have been there from the start, to appreciate the sheer artistry of this music colossus whose voice always made the heart beat faster. Donna brought great light into my life. I am so glad to have met her on a few occasions. She was a muse to me. I wtrote "Riding Home From Baltimore" after meeting her. It tells the tale of my first experience as a kid hearing her on the radion while riding in the bacseat of a car. It was released and got a good push, but did not chart. However, each lyric and note sung were out of pure love and admiration! Donna...there will always be a you.

Donna Summer helped us dance and sometimes sing and we do open mic and setting it up in Egypt baby and a girl can find a velvety throne wondering why nobody thought it was crazy and hot loving says she is never alone thanks for a summer of a restless spirit and a warmth that touches the fiber of a vast resource of music

Donna, Thank you for bringing some disco joy to this world. You were so wonderful and kind to us all! Now, you are now in Heaven as the "Angel of Disco" in Paradise, where it will never be your "Last Dance"!
May your music be in our hearts forever!
