Doris was a wonderful and vivacious LADY. She always made you feel welcome when in her home. I made three costumes for her when she performed during the reopening of the New Amsterdam Theater and it was pure pleasure. I surely miss her and her sunshiny face.

I agree with all the obviously heartfelt tributes to this great lady. Almost all the tributes came from people who knew her later in her illustrious life. I knew her from her Arthur Murray days. She was an inspiring and eminently successful leader. I'm sure there would be a lot more tributes from my Arthur Murray associates if they knew of this outlet for their accolades.
She lived and loved life and her legacy to all of us I'm sure would be to do just that. My condolences to all of you who miss her as much as I do.

I met Doris when she moved to Oklahoma in 1971, it has been a wonderful friendship for 40 years. I will miss her smile, the chats we would have, the parties and the dinners we would share. I have been very blessed to have had her in my life. Now I see her dancing with Paul and doing skits with Charlie. I know there is another Angel to watch over me.

I am going to miss Doris in so many ways, I wish the whole world could have known her the way I did. Doris always made me feel at home when I was with her, she had a quiet dignity about her that I respected in so many ways, she never had mean words to say about anyone, if she was upset with something you did she would just tell you and then it was forgotten. I always wanted to make her day's as special as possible, I felt like I wanted to give her something back for all she gave. I will miss seeing her in her blue chair and watching TV with her in Charlie’s room, however, she is in my heart and will always be part of my life. Just Dance Doris! Love, Arlene

If we could all affect the world as she has, how wonderful it would be. She sounds like one person who definately lived life to the fullest. God has blessed you as her family with many wonderful memories. May you treasure those and speak of her for many generations to come. How proud you must be of her and her legacy. God Bless you all.

Like fancy ribbons she rode in beauty's air while curls and swirls danced in lacy golden rays.
As if peeking through a side swept lake came glimmering eyes in notes of praise.
Soon she cleared the halo of morning's misty face and kissed the vast blue horizons endless space.
Drifting clouds softy embraced evergreen rugged mountain scenes.
She disappeared laughing with echoes of swiftly changing season's gliding past.

As a former employee of Mrs. Travis, as a dance instructor, I have fond memories of teaching at the Arthur Murray studios Birmingham, MI branch, in the late '50s. She was a charmer but a task master at the same time. I cherish the time we worked so hard to give pleasure and poise to our students.

I had never even heard of Doris Eaton Travis until I read the obituary in the NY Times; since then, I have been reading all I can about her, absolutely fascinated by the amazing life that this wonderful woman lived and how she lived it to the fullest. And despite my late and posthumous newcomer status to her legion of fans, I now feel that I've known her for a long time. I cry every time I watch her last Broadway Cares appearance and smile when I watch the clips of her graceful dancing at that same venue from ages 94-100+. I miss her as I would miss a dear relative. My deepest condolences to all who loved her.

To the Family and many Friends of Doris Eaton Travis,
I am so sorry for the loss of such a family treasure like Mrs.Travis. At a time like this I hope the family will draw on the many wonderful memories she must have made over the years.
Take comfort from this thought:Psalms 34:18-"God is near to those who are broken at heart..."
You can feel that Death can leave a heartache that nothing can heal, just know that Love can leave a memory that no one can steal.

It was our pleasure to host Doris at our library in Bristow to review her book "The Days We Danced". She was a most extraordinary person, having three careers and earning her master's degree from the university of Oklahoma in her mid '80s. Just after her 100th birthday, I asked her if she had danced in a spring benefit she always attended in New York City. She said, "Yes, I danced the Conga!" It was a great blessing to get to meet her and interview her. Deanna Smith, KREK Radio, Bristow, Ok.

I came home and caught some of her story on Oklahoma Public Televsion last eve.5-13-10. I was so interested in her story that I got online to find out that she just died. What an inspiration. I am nearly 60 and new to learning square dancing in the Northwest Oklahoma panhandle. It is a great family activity and as I watched her high kicks, she radiated. God is good. She is an inspiration. Here is a lady who lived life to the fullest...and enjoyed every day. She is still an inspiration. I was just wondering why in the world I should finish my bachelors degree at 58, and then I read Doris' story. For myself, my family and for YOU, Doris Eaton Travis, I'm going to keep at it. Thanks for the extra kick when I needed it the most. You were sent to us an angel, and now you have returned. We'll compare diplomas when I see you in heaven.

I had the pleasure of working with this wonderful woman for about seven months in Norman,Ok before she made her final move to Michigan. I loved the stories she would always tell and when she would speak of her dancing days boy would she light up. I had the pleasure of seeing her dance in her home and that memory will last forever in my mind. I've had the pleasure of doing many things for her and at times just simply talking with her which would just take my breath away and again the memories will last forever. That woman had an amazing heart and an amazing life. I will never know anybody like her in my lifetime. Doris you will be greatly missed!! You will forever be in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. RIP Doris Eaton Travis.
