Simply the most consequential diplomat of our time in America and around the world. A mentor for some of us, a friend to thousands, a hero to our nation and a role model for future American diplomatic leaders.

It was a couple days before Christmas 1987. I was serving as a mid-level Foreign Service Officer in the NATO Affairs Office -- a notorious sweat shop even in the busy European Bureau at State. Most of us believed we were essential to the safety of the Western World, so had taken a pass on the Bureau Christmas party. All of a sudden in walks Secretary Shultz -- no entourage, no security. He gathers us around for a short, but heartwarming Christmas greeting and pep talk. Not sure I remember just what he said. But I have remembered ever since his final thought for all of us that evening. He said that no matter how busy he was or what were the responsibilities pressing in on him, he always carved out "20 minutes every day to do something just for myself." In an office environment where non-stop work and pressure were our daily fare, we were all quietly flabbergasted. Secretary Shultz just looked at us for a beat or two, smiled and turned for the door. But not without saying over his shoulder "Now how about let's get over to the party!"

I have never forgotten that moment and never will. George Shultz was for me the greatest Secretary of State in my three decades in the Foreign Service.

The accomplishments of Ronald Reagan and George Shultz were some of the most monumental in our world's history, bringing down the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall.

George Schultz passed away on Ronald Reagans 110 birthday. Both were on the side of decency and what was right.

George was a well-loved man here in the hill towns of Western MA. As for our little church in Haydenville, MA., Our Lady of The Hills Parish now, but when he attended Mass their it was called Saint Marry's Parish when he was living in his summer home in Cummington, MA. I don't think there was a parishioner there that didn't look up to him for all the help that he gave. May God Bless all his family.

My condolences to the Shultz family. I followed his career and writings through the news since my college years. He was one of the few folks in Washington D.C. that nearly brought me to writing fan mail and I've always believed he was under-appreciated & under-recognized. His recent op-ed pieces were spot on and so important during these fractious times to have someone with his gravitas say. Having him as an "eminence grise" among the Republicans was always reassuring. The nation will miss him greatly.

I REMEMBER GEORGE SCHULTZ

He was a great U.S. Secretary of State. I remember being at a dinner hosted at The York Club by former Prime Minister John Turner. I was seated next to Mrs. Schultz. I asked her where they where staying – “The Park Plaza”. I said “that’s great, a nice walk just three blocks from here”. I vividly recall her reply along the lines of “Is it safe, to do that? We couldn’t do that in San Francisco”. I recall Secretary Shultz’s wise words that night.
I also rejoice in what a great city Toronto was and still us.

I had a chance to meet George Shultz at a few events organized by the Honorary Consulate of Romania where he was the special guest. It was an amazing chance of my life to be able to talk with the person who I consider the best diplomat in the US History, who had a major role in the fail of the Berlin wall.
I had a chance to talk to him at that event, and he asked me: "George, tell me in one sentence what was your main impression about experiencing the Romanian revolution." I told him: "It was a moment when I escaped fear ! He told me, that is pretty normal, because the freedom is equivalent with the lack of fear !"

In his speech he mentioned that he was criticized because he spoke to Ceausescu. He said that Romania was like a garden, where the weeds grew a lot. But between the weeds are flowers, and history showed that the weeds disappear but the flowers always remain. He visited Romania during Ceausescu times, because we wanted to connect with the flowers.
RIP and Condolences for the family. Her is a picture from an event in February 2007, at the SF City Halls' Green Room when we celebrated the accession of Romania to the EU.

In the picture George Schultz is with (from left to right): George Roth, the honorary Consul of Romania San Francisco, the Charge d'Affaires of Romania in the US, Daniela Gitman, The Honorary Consul General of Romania Dana Beldiman, and the Consul General of Germany in SF.

Dear George, RIP and you will always be with us in our memory !

He became dean of the GSB at The UofC when I was the payroll clerk there. Later on I felt a surge of pride that someone I knew personally went on to be Secy of State.
