Iwao Takamoto Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2007.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Iwao Takamoto, the animator who created the beloved Scooby-Doo and directed the cartoon classic "Charlotte's Web," has died. He was 81.

Takamoto died Monday of heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Warner Bros. spokesman Gary Miereanu said.

In a career that spanned more than six decades, Takamoto assisted in the designs of some of the biggest animated features and television shows for Disney and the Hanna-Barbera animation team. They included "Cinderella," "Peter Pan," "Lady and the Tramp," "101 Dalmatians," "The Jetsons" and "The Flintstones."

But it was his creation of Scooby-Doo, the cowardly dog with an adventurous heart, that captivated audiences and endured for generations.

Takamoto said he created Scooby-Doo after talking with a Great Dane breeder and named him after Frank Sinatra's final phrase in "Strangers in the Night."

The breeder "showed me some pictures and talked about the important points of a Great Dane, like a straight back, straight legs, small chin and such," Takamoto said in a recent talk at Cartoon Network Studios.

"I decided to go the opposite and gave him a hump back, bowed legs, big chin and such. Even his color is wrong."

Takamoto also created other famous cartoon dogs such as Astro from "The Jetsons" and Muttley, the mixed-breed that appeared in several Hanna-Barbera animations. He also directed the 1973 feature "Charlotte's Web."

Born in Los Angeles to parents who had emigrated from Japan, Takamoto graduated high school when World War II began. He and his family were sent to the Manzanar internment camp in the California desert, where he learned the art of illustration from fellow internees.

Despite a lack of formal training, he landed an interview with Walt Disney Studios when he returned to Los Angeles and was hired as an apprentice.

Takamoto worked under the tutelage of Disney's "nine old men," the studio's team of legendary animators responsible for its biggest full-length films before moving to Hanna-Barbera Studios in 1961. There he worked on cartoons for television, including "Josie and the Pussy Cats," "The Great Grape Ape Show," "Harlem Globe Trotters" and "The Secret Squirrel Show."

Takamoto was survived by his wife, Barbara, son Michael and stepdaughter Leslie.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

For Iwao...you genius in animation
created the world famous Scooby-Doo.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

For: The Takamoto Family from Michael Jaster,

I lost my father to lung cancer in 2004 and a Mom in 1985 when I was only 15. I am now 39 years old. This wonderful gentleman's work has given me inspiration and great feelings in times of difficulty/heartache in my life. I have fond memories of my favorite Scooby Doo as well as the other characters the Mr. Takamoto breathed life into. He touched countless millions of people through his work as you know. I wish I could have been blessed to have met him but still I feel as kind as was and the zest for life he had I feel like I already knew him. I have many of his cels and other items that I treasure and will for years to come. Maybe one day I will even find that elusive Production Cel from the Orig. Scooby Doo WHere are You! No Doubt Iwao is in Heaven with the good Lord smiling down on everyone here and would want his family, friends, and everyone that loved him to know he is in a wonderful place and waiting for us to meet with him again one day!

God Bless to the Takamoto family, you had a wonderful father/husband who in my opinion is a great American Hero. I say that as I have served in Middle East in the NAVY in service to our country. Look what Mr. Takamoto has done in his service with the American History that is so priceless and will be loved/remembered/enjoyed forever.
GREAT HUMAN BEING, and an example to many young/upcoming youngsters. SHowed that with hard work and creativity you can do it!!! I am thankful to have appreciated Mr. Takamoto and his fine work.
With great love and respect,
Michael Jaster Houston

When I heard of your passing, I realized I knew your son, many, many years ago- While your work is delightful and enduring . I remember your son who was a very special person in my life, even though I knew him far too briefly. I think his character speaks of an even greater legacy than your delightful animations. and is your greatest achievement of all. Happy trails to you- Mr. Takamoto. And may your presence be felt as a loving light to your family.- And, as for the rest of us- we will continue to feel your talented presence as we share our childhood memories- you created with our children and grandchildren.
To Michael and his family my thoughts and prayers are with you,
from- a friend who knew you when...

Mr. Takamoto brought joy to millions of people and will always be remembered. Three generations of my family love Scoobie, the Jetsons, the Flintstones, as well as the other cartoon characters he worked on for Disney. My 9 year old grand-daughter watches Scoobie, has Scoobie toys, video games, and I sewed a quilt for her of Scoobie. She, like so many others, was not aware that Mr. Takamoto developed Scoobie, she thought it was Hanna-Barbera; this has now been corrected. If there was a special Oscar presented for life-time achievement in cartoon animation, Mr. Takamoto would have my vote and should be the recipient. He has brought so much joy and wisdom to children. His cartoons provided a message to our young, not blood and guts, not killing, but made them think who the bad guy was, made them use their brains.

I can tell by his face that his work gave him much happiness. Sometimes a very bad thing can turn out to be a very good thing. His time in the internment camp may have have been his only opportunity to learn to love illustrating. Your work will live on for many, many generations Mr. Takamoto!
