Mr. Joseph Dyals was my art teacher when I was in elementary at Lawton Chiles Elementary school and I was extremely saddened when they informed me and the rest of the students of his passing. I am now graduated from high school and still remember how good of a teacher he was.

I don't know what to say: Joe was our room mate our first year at FloArts. I've been searching to find him for about a year or more: He was an awesome guy...proud his life crossed paths with mine... Joe was the first person who made me open my eyes and live life. I remember the house we rented in Palatka and his crazy way of getting inspired to do his art projects. Rest in Peace my friend.

I will miss Joe so much! We became friends as a result of him choosing to use my art fundraising company that I started ten years ago! I had been an art teacher to over 900 students so we had a common ground and bond from the start! He truly loved seeing the children "light up" when they saw their art! We had lots of wonderful conversations and I could always count on some fantastic laughs, hilarious jokes and also, best of all, his sincere compassion. When I received this news today, my heart sank. I share how deeply saddened I and my team of employees were to hear about Joe. We will keep his family in our prayers and know that Joe will continue to touch the lives of the thousands of children that he taught as well as his faculty friends. I know he touched mine for over ten years. God Bless Joseph Dyals. I am blessed to have had him as my friend.

Mr. Dyals was my very first art teacher. I'm 20 now and studying art and graphic design in college.
To his family and friends: I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr. D was genuine and selfless. You know someone's great when they impact the life of a seven year old.

My mother worked with Joe and she also volunteers at the VA Hospital. Joe organized a paper ornament project with every student at Chiles each year in December. I would take hundreds of the paper ornaments and decorate the walls at spinal cord injury unit at the VA Hospital. The vets would tell me where to hang them and loved the colorful decorations. Joe also joined our family for Thanksgiving and many of his original ink drawings are framed and hanging in my parents' home. He will be dearly missed.

Dear Parents of Mr.D,
I am Jordan... Mr. D was my art teacher since the second grade. Now I am in 8th grade. But when I left the school after 5th grade, I still used to stop by Mr. D's room and say "Hi." I was very close to Mr. D and on Thrusday afternoon I was in a ball, in the corner of my room, crying and sobbing. I really wish that he was still here. But if you think about it.... He didnt suffer from anything. And he is in a much better place. He will be watching over all of us, with the Big Man himself (God).
WE WILL ALL MISS HIM...

For Ben and Lynda, Kay and I did not know Joseph as an adult but it is apparent from the remarks of those who did know him that he was a tremendous human being and one of whom you could be immensely proud. Considering whose son he was, the fact he was a very high quality man is not surprising. Our not knowing him was our great loss. We extend to both of you and your family our heartfelt sympathy. My daughter Audrey loved Mr.Dyals dearly. She hugged him many times. She enjoyed his art class for all the four years she was at Chiles. We just had to go say Hi to him at the open house. He was excited to begin another fun year. He bragged about having more time for art class than some schools. He always had a smile and Hello for all. He recently told my daughter that he loved the way she always walked into his class smiling at him. And that is how we hope to remember him. He is so missed by so many. Audrey says he is now an angel with her Grandmother and together they will paint the most beautiful sunsets and rainbows. My heart and prayers go out to all his family and friends. We all know what a very special and sweet man he was and we are so thankful for all he inspired our children to be.

My son and I had not seen Mr. Dyals since leaving Chiles in 2001, but we are both heart-sick to hear of his passing. He will remain a bright spot in our memories of that time.
As a parent volunteer, I worked with Joe in the after school 'Discovery Club'. He was always enthusiastic and full of joy. His art club always filled up because he made each child feel special.
My son - just a 3rd grader at the time - admired one of Joe's drawings, so Joe gave it to him. That's just the kind of giving person he was. Ben has hung this pencil drawing of an eagle over his desk for the past 10 years. He treasures it now more than ever.
To his family, please know that Joe made a genuine difference in the lives of thousands of children. His artistic spirit truly lives on in them.

I worked with Joe for many years at Tampa Palms before we split and he went to Chiles. We kept up with him through our art teacher Liz and always knew he was doing well and had found such a good home at Chiles with so many of our old Tampa Palms family. A kinder soul never walked. Loved his job and the kids. I remember joking so often at lunch with him and he would roll his eyes and smile from ear to ear. He touched with kindness so many and will be sadly missed and thought of often. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this hard time. Just remember how many young lives he touched and molded. He was truly special to all he met and taught.

I don't know if you remember me, but Joe and I were friends back in his WD days. We came out to your place to go skiing a time or two. I know he was having a rough time of it back then, but we reconnected through Classmates a couple of years ago and he was so happy with his life, his career, and was using his talents the way that allowed him to reach many lives, including changing his own. I had often thought of him through the years, so I was thrilled to discover that he was happy and content. I am so very sorry for your loss. I know as a mother of a son myself, I cannot begin to fathom your suffering and sorrow. Please know your son was loved by many.

Mr. Dyals was a great man. I have always loved ceramics and when he was working with clay with the children he would always let me join my class and make my own piece. He was always asking us (classroom teachers) what we were doing in our classrooms so that he could incorporate it with the stduents art projects. Mr. D will surely be missed. He was a wonderful man who leaves BIG shoes to fill. Heaven has gained a new angel and Mr. D is no longer in pain. We will miss you!!!

Joseph was my second cousin. Because I live in Illinois I did not spend much time with him. But the times I was around him I was blessed. Joe was a sensitive, caring person. He was loved by his family and friends. He will be missed so much. I pray for those he left behind. They will need to be comforted because there will be a great sense of loss in their hearts. I am so sorry to hear of the tragic loss of Joe Dyals. I first met Joe while going to school at Central Florida Community College. We both wanted to be art teachers. We continued on to the University of Florida. We shared many, many classes together at UF. I have many wonderful memories of Joe from our time at school. We worked on projects and shared our passion for art. I always knew that he would touch the hearts and inspire the minds of his students.I am sorry that we lost contact over the years. We should never get to busy for old friends. He will always have a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with the Dyals family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dyals family and all of the Chiles Elementary teachers and students. Our 2 sons enjoyed art classes with Mr. Dyals. We have many ceramics, art portfolios, and doodles saved through the years. They will be cherished even more.
As a parent walking thru Chiles on any given day, a quick "Hello" from Mr. Dyals often turned into a conversation about his students and what projects his classes were working on. You knew that he loved his students and the artwork they created.
Thank You, Mr. Dyals! Heaven is a better place now with an awesome art teacher!

Any death is a loss to some one, and in this sad case...to so many. God has a new Potter, a new Art Teacher in heaven. May the things that this teacher taught his students, whom he obviously loved as a good and kind and gentle man does as a teacher, always remind his students of the fact that goodness and postive things in life go on, long after we may leave this earth. May God bless each and every soul who morns Mr. Dyals passing.

Words cannot express the profound loss so many children (and their parents) are feeling. Our children have many great memories of Mr. Dyals and art class. They were so proud of their artwork displayed at the annual art shows and of their clay projects. They will long remember the special rainbow crayons Mr. Dyals gave out when a student brought in supplies for the art room. Mr. Dyals will be truly missed. Thank you for what you did for our children.

The Ball family wishes to extend our deepest sympathies to the Dyals family. My three children had the wonderful experience of being in Mr. Dyals class, and I had the pleasure of working with him. He liked to play pranks on me while we worked bus duty together. Those memories make me smile and my children's art pieces will be a constant reminder of the dedicated teacher he was. Thank you Joe for spreading your love of art to others...God bless

The clay pottery items that my children have created over the years are displayed in a curio cabinet in our house. When these projects come home at the end of the school year the girls want their pieces displayed in a "special" place. These beautiful little pottery projects will now have a more significant meaning for my kids as they grow up. Each piece will have memories of Mr. Dyals. God bless his family, his co-workers, and the kids who will miss him.

Mr. Dyals will be greatly missed. I can't tell you how excited my kids were to go to art each week & make their special projects. It was such a wonderful event to see all the kids hard work at the art show each year and to share their excitement when they found 'their' projects displayed for all to see. They felt so proud & excited to be 'famous' artists. My oldest son had the privilege of attending Mr. Dyals art class since Kindergarten, and he is now in 5th grade. My youngest also loved going to art & sharing his creations. My kids were so lucky to have experienced such a great teacher who made all his students feel special and talented. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to your students, both past & present. You will not be forgotten. My heart goes out to your friends and family at this difficult time. God bless.

As a parent and art lover, I looked forward every year to the clay creations my children would bring home for Mother's Day, Father's Day and the creations for the Square One art fundraiser. I have tiles from every one of their years at Chiles. My son was lucky enough to have Mr. Dyals from Kindergarten through 5th grade. My daughter is in her last year at Chiles and was supposed to have Mr. Dyals for art today. How sorely missed he will be. It is surreal that such a true staple of our school and community is now gone. Our family's sympathies, prayers and best wishes go out to his family and friends. Here's to you, Mr. Dyals.

This morning as we drove past a scene of an accident, my kids asked me if that person was going to be alright. I told them that I did not know, but all we could do was pray. It was not until later on this afternoon after seeing so many heart broken children crying and talking to my daughter that I knew that the victim of this mornings accident was my daughters art teacher. My daughter Lizette is new to Chiles and because we recently moved to tampa from out of state, I did not have the pleasure to meet Mr Dyals. What I do know is that he must of been a great art teacher. My 8 year old was so happy when she had art a few wks ago for the first time. She had told me "mom, in art class I made a fish and my teacher said I did a good job, I like my art class". You see my daughter had just been in art class 2 times. She was very anxious last night because she had specials today and she knew it would be art. If a person can inspire and build self confidence in a child with two encounters then he must of been the greatest role model. My daughter asked if it was ok for her to cry even though she did not know him very well. She said that she felt a need to cry and she didn't understand. I told her that it was ok to do so, and that her teacher had a big job in heaven helping the angels create art. May God bless this wonderful teacher and our condolences to his family.

When you are a writing teacher, you are successful when your students see themselves as authors. When you are a science teacher, you are successful when your students think like scientist. When you are an art teacher, you are successful when your students think creatively and feel like they are artists.
Joe couldn’t have been any more successful at being an art teacher. He encouraged each and every one of his students and guided them in expressing themselves through a multitude of media. His students truly became artists under his care. Students’ hearts swelled with pride at the amazing annual art show he put together each year. Artwork was always plentiful and required the help of many volunteers to display ever so carefully --- and elegantly. The media center was transformed each and every spring into a brilliant array of colors. Children in all grade levels anxiously awaited their class’s turn to visit the show during the school day. Each wide-eyed child scanned the white tags with student names to find their class and then scanned the area for their piece. If you’d ever been to the art show, you know what I’m talking about.
And the kids weren’t the only ones that were excited. In the evening hours of the art show, parents, too, marveled at the masterpieces that were crafted by such small hands.
Joe meticulously ran his art room like a finally tuned machine and ensured that every child had a piece of clay work along with another piece of artwork of their choice at the show.
Joe’s students didn’t just think they were artists. They KNEW they were artists. How do I know? Not only could you see hearts filled with pride, but the kids respected each others’ work, too. They gingerly walked through the show, examining the pieces, pointing out those that were particularly impressive, and excitedly looking at what the next grade above them had done ---- and the anticipation for next year had begun. I know as a parent, too. My daughter’s pieces hang in our home – framed – for all to see.
It is an understatement to say Joe has touched many lives. He has inspired young lives, fostered creativity in young lives, and helped so many children blossom.
"The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires."
Joe was a great teacher. He will be greatly missed by his students and his colleagues.
God bless Joe's family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
