Louis Nye Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2005.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Comedian Louis Nye, who created a national catchphrase belting out "Hi, ho, Steverino!" as one of the players on Steve Allen's groundbreaking 1950s TV show, has died. He was 92.

Nye died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with lung cancer, his son, Peter Nye, told The Associated Press on Monday.

Nye had worked regularly in nightclubs and on television until just a couple of years ago, his son said. He had a recurring role from 2000 to 2002 in the HBO comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm" as the father of Jeff Garlin's character.

When he joined Allen's show in 1956 he was already well established as one the era's hippest comics, appearing regularly on radio, in clubs and on early TV shows.

A master of voices and accents, he could go from being droll one moment to prissy the next. He could also switch effortlessly from comically evil Nazis to bumbling Russians.

"He has a great business card from that time that lists something like 15 accents that he could do," his son recalled with a chuckle.

On "The Steve Allen Show," which ran until 1961 under various names, he quickly endeared himself to audiences as Gordon Hathaway, the effete, country-club snob who would welcome Allen's arrival with the "Hi, ho, Steverino!" salutation.

Other regulars on the landmark show included comedians Don Knotts, Tom Poston and Bill Dana.

After the show's run ended, Nye appeared often on TV game shows, in films and as a regular on "The Ann Sothern Show." He was often cast as the second banana, never the lead.

Nye appeared as Sonny Drysdale, the prissy son of harried banker Milburn Drysdale, in the debut 1960-61 season of "The Beverly Hillbillies." He once said his character was dropped after one season because a CBS executive thought he was "too sissified." Nye returned as Sonny for the 1993 TV movie "The Legend of the Beverly Hillbillies."

Nye teamed with Allen again in 1967, on "The Steve Allen Comedy Hour," a CBS show in which he also portrayed Gordon Hathaway. His cohorts included Allen's wife, Jayne Meadows, Ruth Buzzi and John Byner, among others.

In the summer of 1970 he hosted the variety show "Happy Days" on CBS and three years later co-starred with Norman Fell in the New York garment industry sitcom "Needles and Pins." He played Kirby Baker in the 1978 TV show "Harper Valley P.T.A."

In the 1980s and '90s Nye provided various voices for the "Inspector Gadget" cartoon show.

His film credits included "Cannonball Run II," "Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood," "A Guide for the Married Man," "Good Neighbor, Sam" and "Sex Kittens Go to College."

He also guest starred on such shows as "St. Elsewhere," "The Love Boat," "Laverne & Shirley" and "The Munsters," and appeared frequently as a guest on "The Jackie Gleason Show," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and "The Andy Williams Show."

Nye was born May 1, 1913, in Hartford, Conn., where he began his career in theater before moving to New York City to enter radio.

Although the son recalled his father as being "just naturally funny," the elder Nye once told The Associated Press that when he began his career he had aspirations of being a serious actor.

"I still think of myself as an actor," he said in that 1970 interview. "In the radio days I was busy playing rotten Nazis, rich uncles and emotional juveniles - the whole span - and the only time I tried to be funny was at parties."

It’s been years since Mr. Nye’s death, but after watching him again in “Good Neighbor Sam”, I am reminded of how much I loved Mr Nye’s comedic performances. I could just look at his straight face and laugh. Truly a unique character/entertainer. There has been nobody like him. Rest In Peace funny, brilliant, beautiful man.

For Louis...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I had the opportunity of meeting him when I worked as a stunt man in a couple of appearances as a stuntman on the Steve Allen Sunday Night Show. During rehearsals I struck up conversation with this gracious man, who was so friendly and unassuming. I bumped into him in a couple of times on the streets afterwards and he remembered me. I always made sure not to miss seeing the show just to see him do Gordon Hathaway. I'm sure that he's together with some of his buddies from the show and making God and others laugh.

I miss the days where humor was subtle and really funny rather than being shoved in your face. I miss the days where entertainers could do it all-sing, dance, tell jokes,anything--as opposed to today where every entertainer is a specialist. I miss the days where every entertainer was a great one--Louie Nye, Bob Hope, Milton Berle and the list could go on. I miss the days when my dad and I were entertained by every show on TV instead of a TV in every room so every family member can watch what they want. And I miss you Louis Nye and until we meet again, may God bless.

It was the mid 1980's and I was flying first class from Texas to Miami. Louie was in the seat next to me and insisted he show me the brand new pair of cowboy boots he had just purchased. He was so proud of them.

Louis was booked that weekend at the then new Diplomat Hotel in Miami Beach. After we landed I offered to drive him to the hotel since I lived nearby, had my car at the airport and he would have had to take an expensive cab ride to the Diplomat. He graciously declined my offer but I insisted and he finally accepted after i convinced him the cab would be very expensive. He didn't know it was a long distance from the airport to the hotel.

I spent a wonderful couple of hours with Louie that day and I will always remember his down to Earth humor and friendliness.

I just saw a Guide for the married man, with Walter Mauthau, and the movie, good Neighbor sam with Jack Lemmon, and that's when they made great movies. You're father was so funny in Good Neighbor Sam when Jack Lemmon was driving in San Fransisco around the curves trying to distract your dad, then the door flies open and your dad was hanging on for dear life. That was the best scene of the whole movie. You were blessed with such a great Father

I am very sorry for your loss. I met Louis when I worked at his home installing an alarm system many years ago. One day he was visited by Bill Dana and I said to him I have a record that you made as "Jose Jimenez" called "The Astronaut" and Mr. Dana said to me" so you're the one who bought that !"
Louis Nye was a nice and very funny man. He is missed.

Thought of You Often, sorry I waited too long.

On a summer day in 1980 I was traveling from JFK to California. I was stuck in the terminal waiting for my flight with that famous little pink box in my hands for my mother. I was only 22 at the time when this very distinguished, mature, handsome man, who was dressed to impress, was sitting beside where I stood.

He offered me is seat and would not take no for an answer. He smiled and I knew his face, however I said only no thank you, but again being a gentleman he insisted. He knew I recognized him, and we shared a confirming smile as I sat down in his seat. He then walked away pleased that I took his offer.

A while later again the man returned. This time he asked what was in my pink box, "Is it canolli?" I smiled and confirmed his question. He then asked if he could have one. The little devil in me smiled and said "no they are for my Mom." Then I looked at him and said; now I have a question. He smiled back and said, "Yes?" I very politely and quietly (you know New Yorkers are always too star struck) I asked him very simply. "Are you really?" He smiled and quietly replied to me, "yes." We both had our chuckle, and no more was said.

You will never be forgotten Mr. Nye. Never would I have thought you to be such a kind hearted gentleman. You made a girl feel very special and happy, and you left me with the memory of a life time.

I cherish those moments often. I mention them every time someone asked have I ever met anyone famous. That is when I tell this story.

As long as I live you will live in the minds of people as one of Hollywood’s gentlemen. One who was never to proud to give a young lady his seat in a very crowded airport.

I hope we meet in the next life. When we do the pink box will be for you.

To your Family, I hope this is a reminder of how compassionate your beloved Louie (Mr. Nye to me) was.

Louis Nye was a great entertainer, and he was also a Gentleman. I remember him in the 1960's TV Series "Beverly Hillbillies", as Sonny Drysdale, he was always well dressed, wearing a white shirt with an Ascot, neat as a pin! A gentleman in all respects, my condolences to his family. Louis Nye had a positive impact on my life, I will never forget him.

As with all the signatories, I was a big fan of the old 50s Sunday night "Steve Allen Show," especially of "the man on the street." A decade or so later, I traveled through Elmendorf AFB, AK, on a flight crew for a layover and noticed him sitting by himself in the "O" club restaurant. I had the impulse to go over and shake his hand and tell him what a great fan I was, but I chickened out. Looking back, I wish I had, and I learned a lesson from that: given the opportunity, ALWAYS say hello and express sincere thanks for an artist's work, even if their glory has faded. I've re-learned this the hard way with the premature passing of a favorite fiction writer, Ross Thomas, and later Steve Allen himself. We always think that they're still young and that there is plenty of time. DON'T PUT IT OFF! Now I send at least e-mails of praise to novelists, columnists, comic strip artists, and old professors. I know that it's appreciated. BTW, I'm in the process of writing Bruce Gordon ("Frank Nitti") who I discovered (via Google, your best friend) is living in Santa Fe. I got to meet him by chance (in his pinstripe suit) long ago in Kansas City, and now it's time to renew my long-standing fandom. Both Louis and Frank were venerable men of many characters and faces who entertained us for decades, and they can never be replaced.

The great comics who kept us entertained as kids are leaving us.
I did not know about Louis Nye's death.

Although it's been a couple of year's since the death of Mr. Nye, I just had to add my comments here. I have strong memories of Louis in his character of Sonny Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies. Loved that show as a kid and loved Sonny's character...which Louis did so well. I also developed a love of ascots which Sonny often wore. I often said that Louis Nye wore an ascot better than any guy!

He was a great comedian. My condolences to his wife and his son.

Dear Peter:

I was sorry to hear about the death of your father, Louis. Your dad and my mother dated when both were high school students at Weaver. They were born just a few months apart in 1913. ( My mother in November and you father the preceeding May. Growing up they lived only a street apart. Your father on Baltimore St. and my mother on WestBourne PKWY.

My son now works in the business as an assistant to an assistant's assistant (to a literary agent) in Beverly Hills at ICM on Wilshire.

Growing up I was always aware of the relationship between our parents.

Another Weaverite in the loop was Norman Lear...All in the neighborhood -- I mean family.

Again, please accept my sincere sympathies for your loss.

i once took a date (later to be my wife) to see mr. nye appearing in 'charlie's aunt' at the drury lane theater in chicago in the late 60's. in the scene where he is dressed as the aunt and gets a chance to smoke a cigar while charlie and his girlfriend were away was classic. the way he played up to the woman in the first row was unforgetable. Louis Nye was among the funniest character actors to have performed on. His delivery line of "

Hi-Ho Steva-ree-no" always meant that something kookie was about to take place on the Steve Allen Show. Among his best and funniest characters was that of Zombo the horror TV show host featured only once on the Munsters. and does anyone recall when he played the Frankenstein monster itself on the Steve Allen show, the bit ending with an entire audience wearing Frankenstein masks! What a great loss Louie you will be missed.

I'm very sorry to learn of the passing of Louis Nye. His suttle humor impressed me very much as a child; he was truly underrated and under exposed. I think he was a comic genius. I wish he had come on television more often. I'm young middle aged and I don't remember the Steve Allen Show (but I loved Steve Allen),but I remember Mr. Nye as Mr.Drysdale's stepson on the Beverly Hillbillies. He had style.

We have all lost a great treasure here, but I'm sure he's cracking them up in Heaven. Peace to all who are mourning.

It must be very special for a family to look over a Guest Book of a Family member and see Family & Friends that have signed off, but to look over the book and find name after name of people that you didn't know and have them talking about your loved one as if they knew him must be the most wonderful feeling. You expect Family & Friends but to get condolences from strangers that have loved your Father, Brother Son,etc. my God what a beautiful testimony to that person. Like many of the actors you say Oh how sad so&so died but to get people pouring out thier thoughts to you about your Family member that must be awesome. I am sure Louis has one eyebrow arched saying are they talking about me??

He was one of the best and if you were lucky you didn't wet yourself from laughing so hard. This is why the world is so messed up today because the funny, great men of yester year are gone and so the laughter is silenced.

Growing up, I remember Louis Nye as Sonny on the Beverly Hillbillies. What a character! I also remember him on Steve Allen. A treasure. He gave us lots of laughs and I hope his life was just as blessed. He will be missed.

I am saddened by the loss of another great comedian, Mr. Louis Nye. I will remember him as the spoiled rich brat Sonny Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies. God Bless You Louis and your family.

Louis Nye, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason, Bill Dana, Jack Benny - just to name a few...the list is endless of the very funny men that kept my entire family rolling on the floor laughing on a nightly basis. I look back at these men and wish the good clean humor was still with us. We're all thankful for men like Louis Nye.

Ah yes, who can forget the great Zombo episode on "The Munsters". It was a classic! What with Lou's quick comic timing, he made the Zombo character all that more memorable. He was definitely a funny, funny guy. Thanks for the laughs, Louis. I'm sure he's wowing the angels and making them laugh in Heaven, for sure!! Take care and God Bless!!!

I remember Zombo. It was one of my favorite "Munster" episodes. Years later, I had the privilage of meeting Mr. Nye at a New Years Eve party hosted by Mr. Ray Holland. My husband played in the band that night. Mr. Nye was very friendly and even posed for a picture with me which I still cherish and brag about. I was one of the few people who knew him as Zombo as most of the others knew him from Steve Allen show. He was a charming person and a great talent. He will be missed.

To the Nye Family. Growing up with his kind of comedy was a blessing. We should have people of his caliber today and the world would be a grander place. God watch over all of you and keep you safe. Always know he is watching over you on the big stage in the sky.

Bless you

Thanks Louie for your fun loving comedy. You didn't need foul language to make us all laugh. Being a retired accountant I loved it when he played the part of one on the Steve Allen show. The best to all his friends and loved ones.
