Mary Valastro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 23, 2017.
Mary Valastro, the mother of "Cake Boss" reality television star Buddy Valastro, died Thursday morning, June 22, 2017, according to her son. She was 69.

Buddy Valastro announced his mother's death, posting a photograph of him kissing his mother on his Instagram account. She had Lou Gehrig's disease.

"It’s with an extremely heavy heart that I must share the news of my mother’s passing," he wrote in the caption. "She left for heaven this morning, surrounded by the family.

"This is a difficult time for all of us,” he continued, “and I do ask for your patience and respect while we let this sink in. Her battle with ALS has ended, she is no longer suffering and I hope she’s dancing to 'I Will Survive' with my dad right now.”

Mary Valastro, also known as Momma on the show, was born April 17, 1948, in Altamura, Italy. After immigrating to the United States, she and her late husband, Buddy Valastro Sr., bought Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1964. When Buddy Sr. died in 1994, Mary Valastro decided against selling the business, opting instead to keep it in the family.

"Cake Boss," the reality TV series that airs on the cable TV network TLC, centers on the family-run business now owned and operated by Buddy Valastro, the boss of the shop - hence the show's name - and his brothers and sisters. The show focuses on how the family members make artisanal cakes and the ways that they interact from day to day.

Although Buddy was his mother's No. 1 fan on the show, she also was his biggest critic, which was part of the show's popularity. "Cake Boss," which first aired in April 2009, has continued through eight seasons.

Mary Valastro was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 2013. Also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, it is a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells that control muscles throughout the body. It became known as Lou Gehrig's disease after the star baseball player was diagnosed in 1939.

After her diagnosis, Valasco stepped back from the family business, in part to spend time with her 14 grandchildren.

Buddy and family,

I was looking at our family ancestry, and found everything that my mother, Carmela Catania Link, who you met in Ridgewood. New Jersey was true. Her mother was Maria Valastro lived in Hoboken and had children, FRANK, Pat, Jimmy, Joe, and and little Carmela(Carrie my mom). My uncle MARTY a teenager, died when he was hit by a taxi jumping off a trolley car in Hoboken. My grandmother Maria Valastro Catania and your grandfather were brother and sister. Your dad and my mother were first cousins. Our cousins the Francones owned another bakery in Hoboken. When my grandmother, Maria, Valastro Catania and my grandfather, Pasquale Catania died young my uncle Frank at the time was 18 and he became the guardian of all his siblings, because of that responsibility he could not go back to Italy and reclaim all the families property because of the war, and they wouldn´t let him return to America if he had gone. So your dad knew my uncle Frank & uncle Pat very well even after my uncle Frank moved to Miami with my uncle Joey and my uncle Jimmy. The Valastro family is very large, and it´s a shame we all don´t know each other. I grew up in upper saddle River when my parents who were from Hoboken and Jersey City moved to northern Bergen County. I wish you all a good, healthy, happy life, Gail Link Trumbetti of Allendale New Jersey.

To Buddy & the Famiglia, I am deeply sorry about the passing of "Momma Mary". Buddy, I am a huge fan of your show from the first time it came on TV. "Momma Mary" reminded me of My Italian Aunts, Carmella & Annunziata!! I loved watching how this amazing little Italian Momma kept your sisters & you in their places!! I watched a show last night about "Buddy vs. Christmas". I remember Momma always saying she was the true boss of the bakery!! May Momma Mary rests in peace & I am happy that you, Buddy respected your Momma so much!! Te amo, Buddy!! Just know that she is in Heaven with your precious Dad, Buddy & Salvatore ( the baker who worked with your Dad)!! Te amo!!
Love a real Calabrese Italian Woman,
Patricia Rose Labazzetta-Mastromonico
P.S.- I tried to get My Daughter to bring me to your bakery when it was in Ridgewood, NJ. But sadly it closed before she would take me there!! Te amo, Bartolo!!

Dear Buddy and the entire Valastro Family - My family and I want to send our deepest condolences on the loss of your amazing mother. It was clear from watching your show that she could light up a room with her presence, smile, energy and love of life.

I began watching your show some years ago, at first, just because of the name Buddy. My son, then about 6 (now 12), goes by the nickname Buddy. We fell in love with the similarities of owning a family business, having a big Italian family and all the craziness and fun that comes with that. We have visited the bakery a few times and were sweetly greeted by your sisters Mary and Grace. Mary quickly noticed us call our son Buddy and took a cute picture with him.

When it was reported that your mom was diagnosed with ALS, our hearts broke for all of you. See, my husbands brother had just been diagnosed with ALS not many months prior. As we supported him through the battle he was facing, we tried to find updates on how your mom was doing. We were pulling for her the way we were pulling for him. It's terrible when anyone is going through any type of health crisis, but to watch the effects of ALS on anyone, especially someone you love, is just horrible.

When I read in June that your mom passed away, my heart broke for each and every one of you. I didn't have the heart to share the news with my husband. His brother is his best friend. Sadly, my sweet brother-in-law lost his battle this September.

As we are both facing the first holiday season without those we love so much, we wanted to send our love and prayers to you and your family. You will be in our thoughts. As much as we wish they could be physically with us, we know they are with us in spirit, with amazing family memories and now as angels to watch over us. We are thankful that their suffering no longer. God Bless you all! ❤

She is not dead, she's just away.
Ps. Love your show

Buddy, just watched your show. I went from discussing a possible vow renewal with my husband of 32 years, to holding his hand silently as we watched your family go through the passing of your mom. I have a permanent brain disease called moyamoya. And besides strokes and a coma, we can only hope God will allow me to live years of retirement with my husband. Family is everything. Loss is so hard to take. But it looks like you had alot parties in life. I pray to have one more before my God takes me home. Your memories are all you have. I'm giving as many as I can to my grandchildren, my husband. There are no promises in life. But we can love our family, and love God so that we will see them again one day when we do pass on. Wether it's tomorrow, or five years from now. Take care of your beautiful family!!!

To Buddy and all his famiglia...Momma Mary will be deeply missed. My brother was 52 when he graced the Heavens from the same disease. He was diagnosed in May of 2014 and died on December 8, 2014. He didn't even have a full year. It attacked his breathing. He is in a better place and so is your Momma. May God keep her and my brother in His grace always. God bless you Buddy and all of your family. It's been a rough road, I know. That disease takes everything. I'm always praying for a miracle cure. So far, unfortunately, not much. Rest in peace, Mary Valastro.
