Monica Lewis Obituary
Her former manager, Alan Eichler, says Lewis died Friday of natural causes at her home in the Los Angeles area. She was 93.
Lewis started her career as a vocalist with Benny Goodman's orchestra and went onto record several jazz hits in the 1940s. In 1950, she hit Hollywood, signing an exclusive contract for music and movies with MGM. Her film credits include 1951's "The Strip" with Mickey Rooney and "Excuse My Dust" with Red Skelton.
Lewis was also a popular pitchwoman, appearing in ad campaigns for Camel cigarettes, General Electric and Burlington Mills' hosiery. For 14 years, she voiced the Chiquita Banana cartoon character, who reminded Americans not to put bananas in the refrigerator.
She married production executive Jennings Lang in 1956 and the couple raised three sons together. Lewis made appearances in many of her husband's films, including "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner and "Charley Varrick" with Walter Matthau.
Lewis also guest-starred on various TV shows, including "Marcus Welby, M.D.", "Remington Steele," ''Ironside" and "Falcon Crest." She resumed her singing career in 1985 and recorded several new albums.
Lewis is survived by her two sons and three grandchildren.

Rocky and family,
I will surely miss your mom's spunk, that gorgeous smile and her zest for life. She was very dear to me and made it a point to stop by my office daily to say hi! She told me that she was lucky to have had a full good life and indeed she did! May she rest in peace.

To the Lewis Family: I did not know who Ms. Lewis was but just tonite I was watching online, an episode of the tv series "The Virginian" from Feb 1965. I noticed a very attractive lady playing a part and decided to look her up. It was Ms Monica Lewis. I always want the actors and actresses I look up to be still living so I can email them to tell them how much I enjoyed their past performances I may have just discovered. I was sad to learn Ms. Lewis had passed just 2 weeks ago! I lost my chance to tell her the good feeling I got watching her performance in particular and she wasn't even the main character or star of that episode but she stood out enough for me to look her up. I know my sisters loved to used to sing the Chiquita Banana song. We never knew who sang that but now we do...Now, I want to watch her in interviews and other performances and I want to read her book about Hollywood and her experience of it. If she had said yes to Ronald Reagan, she might have been First Lady! I love Nancy Reagan but its fun to think about what Ms Lewis might have brought to the "job"!
My condolences to Ms Lewis' family. I am sure they are very proud to have had such a famous beautiful and accomplished member of their family become a real life National Treasure!! People like her enrich the lives of those fortunate enough to know and work with them, as well as everyday fans like "little ole me"! May God Bless Ms. Lewis and all of her family.
