Betsy Blair Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2009.
Academy Award-nominated actress Betsy Blair died on March 13, 2009 at her home in London after a long illness. She was 85.

Blair began on Broadway and later starred in several films, including "The Guilt of Janet Ames" (1947), "A Double Life" (1947) and "The Snake Pit" (1948). She married Gene Kelly in 1941. They were divorced in 1957, and Blair later married Czech film director Karel Reisz.

Blair was a rising star in 1940s Hollywood but was blacklisted for her leftist political views and saw her work dry up in the 1950s. With Kelly's intervention, she did manage to land the role of Clara Snyder, Ernest Borgnine's love interest in the 1955 film "Marty," for which she earned an Academy Award nomination.

In 1956 she relocated to Europe, living in Paris before eventually settling in London. Her memoir "The Memory of All That: Love and Politics in New York, Hollywood, and Paris," was published in 2003 to a warm critical reception.

Betsy was the first child to hold me shortly after I was born. She was seven. My sister was six and afraid she'd drop me. Not Betsy. She entered every challenge knowing she could face it and win. She remained that way all her life. She was an inspiration to so many people. I remember going back stage when she was in "Call Me Madam" which starred Ethel Merman, to whom Betsy introduced my mother and me. Years later my children played with with Miss Merman's grandchildren on the dbeaches of Fire Island where the Bogers and my family spent many happy summers. Betsy remained a part of my life until she died.I received a sweet letter from her about a year or so before asking me to come to London to visit her. Shortly after receiving it I heard she was ill and changed my plans. Rest in sacred, loving peace...knowing you are with our God. My love goes with you always. Betty Thompson Roper

To the family: May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

For Betsy...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.
