Ellen Hanley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2007.
NEW YORK (AP) - Ellen Hanley - a musical-theater performer best-known for playing New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's first wife in the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Fiorello!" - has died of a stroke after a long battle with cancer. She was 80.

Hanley died Monday at Norwalk (Connecticut) Hospital, her daughter, Nora Graham, said.

The actress, born in Lorain, Ohio, made her Broadway debut in "Annie Get Your Gun," starring Ethel Merman, in 1946. The following year she appeared as Clothilde Pfefferkorn in "Barefoot Boy With Cheek," a zany collegiate musical featuring Nancy Walker and Red Buttons and written by Max Shulman.

In the 1952 revue, "Two's Company," which starred Bette Davis, Hanley introduced the Vernon Duke-Ogden Nash song "Roundabout."

Hanley also was in the cast of the 1959 musical, "First Impressions," based on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." During the show's run, she replaced leading lady Polly Bergen as Austen's spirited heroine, Elizabeth Bennet. That same year, she appeared in "Fiorello!" - the hit Jerry Bock-Sheldon Harnick musical about the well-known mayor of New York, which ran for nearly 800 performances.

In 1963, Hanley starred in a successful off-Broadway revival of "The Boys From Syracuse," a Richard Rodgers-Lorenz Hart musical based on Shakespeare's "The Comedy of Errors."

During the late 1940s and into the 1950s, Hanley toured extensively in summer theater shows in vacation areas. She also was a regular performer in Julius Monk's celebrated topical revues in the 1950s at such places as Upstairs at the Downstairs.

In 1951, Hanley married Ronnie Graham, a performer and writer for the revue "New Faces of 1952" and who later wrote for such television shows as "MASH." They were divorced in 1963.

I had not thought about Ellen in so many years. I had been side tracked with college, growing up, and those little things that always seem to get in the way. Ellen was my singing instructor when I was younger. I remember being dropped off in Norwalk by my mom and singing with Ellen in her small apartment. She crossed my mind yesterday randomly while on my dinner break from work so I decided to google her. I was so saddened to hear of her passing and found it almost weird that the DAY she crossed my mind after so long was the same day this article was posted. I feel truly blessed to have known her and to have worked with her so closely. She shared so many memories of her exciting life as a singer and actress with me that I will never forget. Everytime I sing a Broadway tune I will think of you, Ellen. RIP <3

My uncle was Ronnie Graham. I stayed with them and my cousin Ronnie when Fiorello was on Broadway and Ellen used to let me stand in the wings and Tom Bosley would put his arm on my shoulder as he went out to perform. She was amazing as a singer and performer and really could fill a room. Ellen was warm and fun and so very very sweet. I will always treasure her memories and gifts she gave me of awakening me to show business, culture and creativeness. She let us use her ironing board upside down as a sled at central park because we had no sled. I loved her.
