56, of Holiday, Fla., died March 16, 2010. Ben was

born July 2, 1953, in Kings Mountain, N.C., but was a lifelong resident of the west central Florida area. In 1971, he graduated from Clearwater High School, where he met his wife, JoEllen. Ben then went on to become a Florida Gator, receiving both his Bachelor of Arts and law degrees from the University of Florida. From 1979 through 1984, Ben served as assistant county attorney for Pasco County. Thereafter, he served as Pasco County Attorney from 1984 through 1991. He was an active member and volunteer in local youth sports, community charitable organizations and the Community Foundation. For the past several years, he has given anonymously to the less fortunate and needy families at Christmas time. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be made to either Gulf Middle School ABC Account, to provide for Christmas gifts for middle school children, or to a newly created fund named in Ben' s honor, the Pasco County BOCC, Ben Harrill Holiday Fund. Checks can be mailed to Community Services Director, Pasco County Community Services Building, 8620 Galen Blvd., Port Richey, FL 34668, to provide for families during the holiday season. When none of this made any sense, I heard a voice whisper in my ear: "Heaven needed a hero". I love and miss you my dearest brother. You were the most compassionate, giving, ethical man I've ever known. Until I see you again.

Dear JoEllen and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Benny. I remember growing up with him and how much we used to play together. After reading his tribute in the paper, I saw that he used the gifts God gave him to do such wonderful things. He will truly be missed. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Ben was a special person. Many people knew him only as an attorney who stood before the county commission representing development interests. But Ben supported the formation of a Pasco Environmental Lands program wholeheartedly. Ben brought many people to ELAMP's cause who might otherwise have never supported it. I am blessed to have known him and eternally grateful for his interest. I will miss him greatly. Jennifer Seney, Pascowildlife

We only knew Ben a short time, but in that time we came to know Ben as a warm, generous and wonderful man who always had a big smile for everyone. He lived a too short, but good life and now our thoughts and prayers are for the loved ones he's left behind. May God bless you all.

I am an employee of the Clerk's Office for over 30 years and have fond memories of working with Ben in the early 80's when he went to court on county ordinance cases. He was always a gentleman and very professional. He always had a smile on his face. My heartfelt condolensces to his wife JoEllen, his sons and the rest of the Harrill family. No words can express my sorrow for your loss. God Bless you all.

I was saddened to hear of Ben's passing. I was honored and blessed to be his legal assistant from 1986 - 1992. Ben was an amazing and honest attorney. More importantly, Ben was a dedicated family man. May God bless and comfort his family during this time. With love and sympathy, Lori
