Jason Atkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2010.
Jason Atkins was born and raised in Boone County, near the coal mine where he lost his life, said his father-in-law, Rick Withers.

The 25-year-old miner and his wife, Amanda, 28, met when they were students at West Virginia Tech and got married in 2008, Withers said. Amanda Atkins could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Withers said he was not sure when Atkins began working at the mine.

"He was an hourly guy," Withers said.

Atkins played second base on his high school and college baseball teams, but left West Virginia Tech without graduating, Withers said. He enjoyed playing golf.

Jason Atkins was one of 29 miners killed April 5, 2010 by a huge explosion in an underground coal mine owned by Massey Energy Co. in West Virginia - the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1970.

I met Jason(aka "Truck") at WV tech our freshmen year as we both went there to play baseball. We both played second base and lived in the same dorm. He was a great friend/teammate. I'll always remember him constantly keeping the team laughing. We had a lot of good nights in Montgomery during our time there. He and I left WV Tech after our freshmen year. To his family and friends, I'm very sorry for your loss and will keep you and Jason in my prayers.

I am a member of Massey in Richmond, VA and I am so very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what your family is and has been going through over the past two weeks but please know you are thought of and prayed for daily.

These guys worked so hard and were just awesome. A few of us flew to WV in October of 2007 and toured the mines, all the guys were all so nice and funny, it was eye opening to see what they did day in and day out underground.

Again please know you are thought of daily.
