Johnny Sheffield Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2010.
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) - Johnny Sheffield, who played the character Boy in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and '40s, has died at age 79.

His wife, Patty Sheffield, told the Los Angeles Times that he died Friday of a heart attack at his home in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista. She says he fell off a ladder while pruning a palm tree four hours earlier.

Johnny Sheffield beat out more than 300 other youngsters for the role of Boy in the 1939 movie "Tarzan Finds a Son!" and went on to co-star with Johnny Wiessmuller in seven more Tarzan films.

He later played another jungle boy, Bomba, in a dozen movies but quit the business after the last one 1955.

Johnny Sheffield went on to earn a business degree and worked for various companies and in contracting and real estate.

Stu, was just looking to contact you and found your father had passed.
He was always the center of attention, and had his comfy clothes.
Deepest condolences to you, my friend, Stuart, and dear Pat and Regina.
Just hugs
Rather belated
New to me
Hope all of you are doing well.
He never stopped wearing a loincloth well, huh?
Am so sure he's resting in great peace!
He was nothing but his charismatic self, right?
Peace, love and, uhm, yeah, oak chokes.
He will be remembered on so many levels!

We lived in the house across the street from the house that John had purchased as a rental in Yuma, AZ. He was a very nice man and down to earth. My dad immensely enjoyed their conversations while John was working on the house getting it ready to rent and he always stopped to visit my mom and dad when he was in town to check on his house. We were very sad to learn that he had passed away. We still talk about him to this day with great fondness.

I just found out that Johnny passed last October; he was only 3 years older than me. I grew up with him as Boy and Bomba. He was a great actor and he complemented Johnny Weissmuller so much, it made the movie that much more enjoyable. He and "Big John" are probably entertaining our Lord and everyone in Heaven. My prayers go out to his family but like I feel, he still lives on in his films. God Bless and keep you.

I was saddened by the notice of the death of Johnny Sheffield. As a kid our local theater had Junior Jamboree for kids on Wednesday mornings during the summer. One of my favorite movies were the Bomba movies. I was fortunate a few years ago to hear about Mr. Sheffield's offer of his
pilot TV program on video tape. I emailed him and ordered it. He was a fine gentleman and I will always remember our emails during the transaction. He was kind enough to send me a couple of autographed photographs with the order. I will treasure these always. By the way the pilot should have been picked up. It is far better than a lot of the trash on TV today. I would recommend it to anyone who might have a chance to see it.

My sympathy to the family. I know you will always miss him but always treasure your memories.

David Smith

February 23, 2011

Some of my fondest early memories are of going to the local theatre and watching Tarzan and Bomba movies. I just found out about Mr. Sheffield's demise while looking up the titles of the old Tarzan and Bomba movies to share with my youngest son. My heartfelt condolences go out to your family as Mr. Sheffield in the role of "Bomba" remains one of the more positive memories of my formative years.

My sincere condolences to all the family. I grew up loving the Tarzan movies and stll have a warm spot in my heart for them- a simpler time perhaps, but adventure, drama, fun and always a happy ending (except for the bad guys). Take heart in knowing that John was and is part of cultural history, and, for me, an important part of that wonderful period in the saga of film entertainment. And a part of my life.
Thanks John.

To the Sheffield Family,
I was so saddened to of your loss. I loved to watch "Boy" on "Tarzan"! He will be missed by many but, the legacy he left behind will go on for generations. May the family find comfort from Isaiah 41:13,"For I, am your God, grasping your right hand, the One saying to you , "Do not be afraid. I myself will help you."

October 25, 2010

To the Sheffield family,

I was sorry to hear of your great loss. As a kid I loved to watch "Tarzan" and enjoyed the relationship he shared with "Boy". He did such a nice acting job, I know he will be greatly missed.

As a child the best way to spend a winter Saturday morning was to watch programs like Fury, Sky King, Tarzan and Bomba movies. Action, adventure - just thrilling stuff for an almost teenage girl. Several months ago I purchased a "Tarzan and the Leopard Woman" movie poster at a used book store. I had not thought of these movies for years and the color was so magnificant that it just took my breath away. It now hangs in my upstairs hallway and is the first thing I see in the morning when I get out of bed: the two Johnny's and Aquanetta in that gorgeous leopard costume. Mr. Sheffield was quite a good actor as a child and young man and it seems he lived a fine life. Tough time for his wife and kids and friends and fans, too. God bless them all.

Pat and family. I was sorry to hear the news of your Dad's death. I don't know if you will remember me, but I'm the Coast Guard Pilot who lived at the Point Loma lighthouse from 1994 to 1997. You and Tigh would come over to Dolphin Tanks and we would surf together a lot. I have good memories of my time in San Diego and surfing with you. Of course, I was also a great fan of Tarzan when I was young. May your father rest in peace and may the Perpetual Light shine upon him.
