Julie Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 24, 2013.
NEW YORK (AP) — Julie Harris, one of Broadway's most honored performers, whose roles ranged from the flamboyant Sally Bowles in "I Am a Camera" to the reclusive Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst," died Saturday. She was 87.

Harris died at her West Chatham, Massachusetts, home of congestive heart failure, actress and family friend Francesca James said.

Harris won a record five Tony Awards for best actress in a play, displaying a virtuosity that enabled her to portray an astonishing gallery of women during a theater career that spanned almost 60 years and included such plays as "The Member of the Wedding" (1950), "The Lark" (1955), "Forty Carats" (1968) and "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" (1972).

She was honored again with a sixth Tony, a special lifetime achievement award in 2002. Only Angela Lansbury has neared her record, winning four Tonys in the best actress-musical category and one for best supporting actress in a play.

Harris had suffered a stroke in 2001 while she was in Chicago appearing in a production of Claudia Allen's "Fossils." She suffered another stroke in 2010, James said.

"I'm still in sort of a place of shock," said James, who appeared in daytime soap operas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live."

"She was, really, the greatest influence in my life," said James, who had known Harris for about 50 years.

Television viewers knew Harris as the free-spirited Lilimae Clements on the prime-time soap opera "Knots Landing." In the movies, she was James Dean's romantic co-star in "East of Eden" (1955), and had rolls in such films as "Requiem for a Heavyweight" (1962), "The Haunting" (1963) and "Reflections in a Golden Eye" (1967).

Yet Harris' biggest successes and most satisfying moments have been on stage. "The theater has been my church," the actress once said. "I don't hesitate to say that I found God in the theater."

The 5-foot-4 Harris, blue-eyed with delicate features and reddish-gold hair, made her Broadway debut in 1945 in a short-lived play called "It's a Gift." Five years later, at the age of 24, Harris was cast as Frankie, a lonely 12-year-old tomboy on the brink of adolescence, in "The Member of the Wedding," Carson McCullers' stage version of her wistful novel.

The critics raved about Harris, with Brooks Atkinson in The New York Times calling her performance "extraordinary — vibrant, full of anguish and elation."

"That play was really the beginning of everything big for me," Harris had said.

The actress appeared in the 1952 film version, too, with her original Broadway co-stars, Ethel Waters and Brandon De Wilde, and received an Academy Award nomination.

Harris won her first Tony Award for playing Sally Bowles, the confirmed hedonist in "I Am a Camera," adapted by John van Druten from Christopher Isherwood's "Berlin Stories." The play later became the stage and screen musical "Cabaret." In her second Tony-winning performance, Harris played a much more spiritual character, Joan of Arc in Lillian Hellman's adaptation of Jean Anouilh's "The Lark." The play had a six-month run, primarily because of the notices for Harris.

The actress was something of a critics' darling, getting good reviews even when her plays were less-well received. These included such work as "Marathon '33," ''Ready When You Are, C.B.!" and even a musical, "Skyscraper," adapted from an Elmer Rice play, "Dream Girl."

Her third Tony came for her work in "Forty Carats," a frothy French comedy about an older woman and a younger man. It was a big hit, running nearly two years.

Harris won her last two Tonys for playing historical figures — Mary Todd Lincoln in "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" and poet Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst" by William Luce. The latter, a one-woman show, became something of an annuity for Harris, a play she would take around the country at various times in her career.

The actress liked to tour, even going out on the road in such plays as "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Lettice & Lovage" after they had been done in New York with other stars.

Harris' last Broadway appearances were in revivals, playing the domineering mother in a Roundabout Theatre Company production of "The Glass Menagerie" (1994) and then "The Gin Game" with Charles Durning for the National Actors Theatre in 1997.

In 2005, she was one of five performers to receive Kennedy Center honors.

Harris was born on Dec. 2, 1925, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the daughter of an investment banker. She grew up fascinated by movies, later saying she thought of herself as plain-looking and turned to acting as a way of becoming other persons.

She made her stage debut at the Grosse Pointe Country Day School in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" at age 14. In the years that followed, she studied drama in finishing school, prep school, Yale University and the Actor's Studio.

Before "Knots Landing," Harris made numerous guest-starring television appearances on dramas and was a regular on two quickly canceled series — "Thicker Than Water" in 1973 and "The Family Holvak" in 1975.

Her Emmys were for performances in two "Hallmark Hall of Fame" presentations: "Little Moon of Alban" in 1958 and "Victoria Regina" in 1961.

Harris was married three times, to lawyer Jay I. Julian, stage manager Manning Gurian and writer William Erwin Carroll. She had one son, Peter Alston Gurian.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Ms. Harris made a tremendous impact through her many works. I am most fond of her passion for historical work, such as `The Civil War´ with Morgan Freeman. I think of Julie Harris often. Her impact made this world a better place.

I remember Julie Harris in so many wonderful roles. My favorite was as Abra in East of Eden. She and James Dean were magnificent in that film. Both were able to portray such vulnerability and humanity in their roles. Both angels then and now.

I had the most wonderful opportunity to see Miss Harris in plays here in Seattle: The Scent of the Rose and The Belle of Amherst. I would send her flowers when she was in town to perform. I would receive the kindest notes from her. I had the opportunity to meet her and actually have my picture taken with her. We would exchange greeting cards. I was so sad to learn of her passing. I remember her when I was a child and she put on such wonderful performances on TV: Victoria Regina et al. God Bless you Miss Harris. We truly miss you. Michael Bachison (Seattle,WA)

She was my favorite actress from the time I was a child. I was always so touched by her performances in films, TV shows and the Broadway plays I was only able to see televised. But... I got to see her in the late 1980s in Cleveland when she toured with Driving Miss Daisy. I was so thrilled. I remember thinking though that she was not so recognizable in her wig and costume yet the voice was Julie. And when the play ended, Brock Peters, Stephen Root and Julie came back out on stage, Julie without the wig and there she was with her gorgeous red hair. The memory of seeing Miss Julie Harris perform was magic. I wish I could have gone to more performances it oh so grateful for those films.

In a darker part of my early life, a performance of Ms. Harris left me with such an uplifting and enlightening experience that brought me to a plateau of new understanding and assurance that there is always "Wonder" about us.
I'll be eternally grateful. I imagine her coming onstage again into a new, untried dimension after making her final curtain call here....

I am so blessed to have known such a fine woman. Grace and talent, a gem for sure. My parents had the pleasure to meet with her after one of her many one woman shows. All she did was talk about me, as if I could hold a candle to that. It was memorable for them, and humbling for me. I will miss her dearly. Sincerely, Godspeed , Lisa Israel

Dear Peter,
I grew up knowing a bit about you from Miss Ida May Wilkinson who came from your home in New York to Franklin, Virginia, each summer to visit her mother, brother, sister-in-law, and niece and nephew who were my family's next-door neighbors.

While Miss Ida May didn't really "talk" about you and certainly not about your parents, she would sometimes share the title of a special book or a recipe that "my young friend Peter" liked. I was in college before my mother explained to me that Peter was you!

Along with the rest of the world, I was a great admirer of your mother, so much so that for my 50th birthday, my wife treated me to a trip to New York to see your mother and Mr. Charles Durning in GIN GAME. We sat on the front row--enthralled. I also saw your mother and Morgan Freeman in Baltimore in DRIVING MISS DAISY--only two chairs and two great actors creating magic on a stage.

My wife Deborah and I (now retired 40-years-apiece-veterans of high school English classrooms) are forever indebted to your mother, for she brought Miss Dickinson to life for us and for our students on film year after year.

Thank you for sharing your mother with the world. I send you my sincerest sympathy.

Ms. Harris illuminated the human heart in ways that few actors can ever achieve. I will always treasure her performances--you were not just an observer for she took you along on the journeys of her characters and you immediately felt their joys and despair. Luminous is the word that most frequently comes to mind because her own generous heart illuminated the lives of those who she portrayed on stage. I hope her friends and family will take comfort in all that she gave to the world.

Living for two decades in Grosse Pointe Park nearby what many years earlier had been the childhood home of Ms. Harris, I have for three times as long been utterly astonished by her stage (Belle of Amherst, Glass Menagerie), film (Member of the Wedding, East of Eden, Haunting, Reflections in a Golden Eye), and television (Victoria Regina) performances, recordings (Stuart Little, Dracula), and co-written book for young actors. Privileged to have met her---and some of her family members---a few times and often exchanged correspondence, I became as much impressed by the consistency of her gracious kindness as her forever stellar acting. Generous with her time and energy no matter what, she was so genuinely her own dear unassuming courteous self during our on again/off again but always delightful exchanges. In every way a class act, she shared the ineffable humanity of each of her wide-ranging characters as well as that within her very self. I am but one of many all that much better for it. Saddened by her death, I shall forever miss our personal connection. Despite that abiding sense of loss, I will continue to cherish the legacy she leaves behind for me and other devoted fans as well as future audiences yet coming to love her. As you have blessed us during your eighty-seven year lifetime and enjoyed career, so are you, Julia Ann Harris, also blessed.

Jule Harris appeared in my life several times —always with love and respect. She took great interest in me as a teenager. Later, she was the subject of a profile I wrote. At other times, she was a warm and understanding friend. For more reasons than I can count, she deserves to be remembered, not just as one of the great actresses ever to appear on stage and in films, but as a wonderful, powerful little woman with a beautiful, giving heart. She will be deeply missed.

Dear Peter:
My thoughts are with you. I have so many wonderful and loving memories of your mother. I'm so luck to have saved years of cards from "Aunt Julie" ... detailing milestones in her life and holiday/birthday greetings.

So sad, that she is no longer here, and for the years I haven't seen her.

Thank you Julie for your thoughtfulness and inspiration. For the days spent in the UN Park and baking cookies together in your townhouse in the East 50's, when I was a little girl. For the years of remembering my birthday, and always thanking me for sending you a birthday card. For all your warm and loving greetings, when I visited you backstage.

I hope there's a heaven and you are with those you hold dear ... including your Yorkie Theresa.

As a teenager I first saw her on tv. She was on "Rawhide" opposite Clint Eastwood & a movie called "The Haunting." My first thought of seeing her was "she is so beautiful, there is something really beautiful about this lady." I'm 57 now & I can remember the thoughts at those exact times. I never saw her in a play, however I know she was the only character that i would focus on no matter who else was present. She was indeed one of God's gifts to us. Something about her that made this poor sad girl feel good about herself. I don't think it was the characters she played, I think it was simply her presence. I saw such beauty. I think "GOD HAS CALLED HIS ANGEL HOME.'

I loved Julie Harris! What a talented actress. I loved all her moments on screen especially "East of Eden" and "A Member of the Wedding".I can't believe she was 24 years of age playing a 12 year old = proof of her greatness! The adaptations of great material, her timing, her natural beauty, she was smart and had wonderful instinct for acting. The whole Actors Studio crew were so talented in the late 50's early 60's.Her voice was so calming when narrating,so expressive. I wish I could have seen her live on stage. I have to say Bette Davis, Meryl Streep and Julie Harris are among my favorites. Good or evil characters= just fantastic energy, always believable. Her energy continues on recorded films and out in the Universe in some other form I am sure, what a blessing, giving hope to younger actors of what true acting can convey, such memorable characters, long after you've left the theater, we are still remarking, because you were "remarkable" ~:) Prayers going out to her loved ones.

I had the honor of seeing her in The Belle of Amherst when she was in Milwaukee. I had a front row seat and I was so glad I had the chance to see her live. She's one of the best of the best and I will miss her very, very much. My sympathy to her family, and thank you for sharing her will all of us.

Miss Harris was the consummate actress...her portrayals in "The Haunting," "Member of the Wedding," "The Belle of Amherst," and the "Columbo" episode, "Any Old Port in a Storm," remain some of my favorites. I'll never tire of watching her work. My condolences to the family, friends, and fellow fans of Miss Julie Harris.
