Alderson-Ford Funeral Homes Inc - CheshireNORMAN R. BENEDICT, Sr., 98, of Cheshire, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025. He was born on May 7, 1927 in Norwalk, to the late Howard Melville and Elsie (Ross) Benedict. Norman Mr. Benedict earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Yale University ‘50 and was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Yale Club of New Haven.
He founded his real estate appraisal and consulting firm, Norman Benedict Associates, Inc., in 1961 and still worked with his son, Norman R. Benedict, Jr. until October of 2025. Norman was awarded many real estate appraising & counseling designations including the (MAI) designation and General Reviewer designation (AI-GRS) by the Appraisal Institute. He served the Appraisal Institute for two years as its Vice President for the Northeast Region of the U.S. and five years as a Member of its Board of Governors. He served as a member of the Division of Curriculum, Vice Chairman of Education, and course developer for the Industrial Appraising and Litigation courses. He has written seminars on Industrial Appraising and Litigation Appraising for the Appraisal Institute. He was also a former chairman of the national Body of Knowledge Committee of the Appraisal Institute. He was a member of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers (now Appraisal Institute) and awarded their designation of Senior Real Estate Analyst (SREA) and Senior Residential Appraiser (SRA).
Mr. Benedict was invited to membership in the Counselors of Real Estate and awarded their designation Counselor of Real Estate (CRE). He served on their Education Committee and their Long-Range Planning Committee. He has served several years as a member of their Board of Governors and has been their representative to national committees of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). He has served as an instructor for the application of basic statistics to real estate problem solutions.
The Appraisal Institute of Canada awarded him their senior designation of Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute (AACI). He was a charter recipient of the General Accredited Appraisal (GAA) designation of the Real Estate Appraisal Section of the National Association of Realtors in 1994. He was elected a Fellow in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) in 2005.
Through the years, Norman enjoyed sailing with his family on his Ericson boat “The Phaedra”, flying his Cessna airplane taking aerial photography and traveling, woodworking, vacationing at his former residence in Marco Island, FL, cooking, gardening, shopping and attending church regularly. He also enjoyed his former memberships at the New Haven Country Club and Pine Orchard Yacht Club where he moored his boat.
Norman leaves behind his son, Norman R. Benedict, Jr., daughter-in-law, Kathy (VanOoteghem) Benedict and two grandchildren, Caleb J. Benedict and his wife Yasmeen Moukaddem and Norman R. Benedict, III. He also leaves behind four nephews, Howard III, Craig, Roger and Scott Benedict, their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Howard M. Benedict and Elsie (Ross) Benedict, his former wife Marjorie A. (Eggerding) Benedict, and his brother Howard M. Benedict, Jr. and his wife Ruth Landau Benedict, MN.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated on January 3, 2026 at 11:00 am at Cheshire Lutheran Church, 660 W Main St, Cheshire, CT 06410. Visitation will be from 10:00–11:00 am in the church library with the service to follow. Burial will follow at the columbarium wall outside the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Cheshire Lutheran Church in his name.
