Louis Zamperini Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2014.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Louis Zamperini, an Olympic distance runner and World War II veteran who survived 47 days on a raft in the Pacific after his bomber crashed, then endured two years in Japanese prison camps, has died. He was 97.

Zamperini's death was confirmed by Universal Pictures studio spokesman Michael Moses. A family statement released early Thursday said Zamperini had been suffering from pneumonia.

He is the subject of Laura Hillenbrand's best-selling book "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption," which is being made into a movie directed by Angelina Jolie and is scheduled for a December release by Universal.

"After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives," the family statement said. "His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days."

Jolie s aid the loss was "impossible to describe."

"We are all so grateful for how enriched our lives are for having known him," she said in a statement. "We will miss him terribly."

A high school and University of Southern California track star, Zamperini - known as the "Torrance Tornado" - competed in the 5,000-meter run at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He finished eighth but caught attention by running the final lap in 56 seconds.

In World War II, he was a bombardier on a U.S. Army Air Forces bomber that crashed in the Pacific Ocean during a reconnaissance mission. He and one of the other surviving crew members drifted for 47 days on a raft in shark-infested waters before being captured by Japanese forces. He spent more than two years as a prisoner of war, surviving torture.

Zamperini became a born-again Christian in 1949 after attending a Los Angeles crusade led by evangelist Billy Graham. He eventually traveled as an inspirational speaker preaching the power of forgiveness.

At age 81, Zamperini - a five-time Olympic torch-bearer - ran a leg in the torch relay for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Nagano. During his visit, he attempted to meet with his most brutal wartime tormentor, Mutsuhiro Watanabe. But Watanabe, who escaped prosecution as a war criminal, refused to see him.

In speeches all over the world, Zamperini never failed to mention his alma mater, said former USC track and field coach Ron Alice.

"He was the greatest ambassador the university ever had. At every appearance, at every speech, he always wore his USC hat," Alice said. "He was the most gracious, humble, inspiring person you'd ever hope to meet. Just very, very special. And that's why there's going to be a movie of his life."

In May, Zamperini was named grand marshal of the 2015 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, which next New Year's Day will feature the theme "Inspiring Stories."

In accepting the honor, Zamperini - wearing the ever-p resent USC cap - recalled that Hillenbrand, while researching the book, asked to interview his friends from college and the Army.

"And now after the book was finished all of my college buddies are dead, all of my war buddies are dead. It's sad to realize that you've lost all your friends," he said. "But I think I made up for it. I made a new friend - Angelina Jolie. And the gal really loves me, she hugs me and kisses me, so I can't complain."

He was a guest of Jolie last year when she was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Hillenbrand called him "the grandest, most buoyant, most generous soul I ever knew."

"In a life of almost unimaginable drama, he experienced supreme triumphs, but also brutal hardship, incomprehensible suffering, and the cruelty of his fellow man," she said in a statement. "But Louie greeted every challenge of his long journey with singular resilience, determination and ingenuity, with a ferocious will to survive and prevail, and with hope that knew no master."

Zamperini was born Jan. 26, 1917, in the western New York city of Olean. A group in Olean is raising funds to place a granite marker in Zamperini's honor in War Veterans Park in August.

He was just two years old when his parents moved the family to Torrance in Southern California, where he lived for the rest of his life. Zamperini Field, a city-owned public airport in Torrance, is named in his honor. A stadium at Torrance High School and the entrance plaza at USC's track and field stadium both bear his name.

His wife, Cynthia Applewhite, whom he married in 1946, died in 2001. His survivors include daughter Cynthia, son Luke and grandchildren.

I read his book and I was so saddened for him by all the suffering he went through. But GOD had a plan for his life. As I read his story I could see the Hand of GOD in his life. GOD used all what Mr. Louis went through to encourage others. My son is 44 yrs old and when I read Mr. Louis' book it reminded me of my son when he was a young boy like Mr. Louis. Defiant and wanting to fight and take revenge when someone wronged him. I emailed Mr. Louis because I wanted to see if he would come and share at my church. I never heard from him, but I understand he was a very busy man. I and my family will see his movie when it comes out. GOD bless Mr. Louis' family.

Today I finished reading the book Unbroken. I had never heard of this man before this book. Oh the emotions that roared in me while reading this story. I wanted to reach in between the pages and punch and kick those who had harmed Louie. What all he suffered, surely he has a wonderful fluffy cloud to whisk around on in Heaven. May this man rest in eternal peace. God knows he's earned it. Thank you Louie for all you and the others did for our country. There were none braver.

My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. God Bless You All.

It is uncanny that the very day I finished reading "Unbroken", Louis Zamperini passed away. His story will not be forgotten...as it speaks for so many brave Americans in WWII. It is unbelievable what the human spirit can achieve...He led an astonishing life on so many levels...may he now finally rest in total peace. My prayers and sympathy to the family he leaves behind.

I have just finished reading Mr. Zamperini's extraordinary story of survival against the harshest of conditions, the brutalities of war and the battles with his darkest demons. The word "amazing" doesn't quite cover the events of this man's life. I can't even imagine the strength of will and soul to endure and, eventually, exit from the dungeons of nightmares and hate with such a forgiving heart. Long may his tale be told, and his legend remain. RIP, Mr Zamperini.

August 28, 2014

To have endured suffering as he and so many war veterans suffered is so sad. One day God will eliminate all war and suffering. To the family and friends you have my deepest sympathy. May Mr. Zamperini finally sleep in peace.

Those who served during WWII are called "The Greatest Generation" for a reason. Don't know why it has taken so long to have these stories told. How many more stories have yet to be told? The USA and the entire free world owes ALL veterans our deep gratitude for their brave and honorable service. That goes for those who survived and those who died in ALL wars for our freedom.
Deepest sympathy to his family. May you feel God's comfort until the day you see him again in the eternal Heaven.

My sincere condolences to the family of Louis Zamperini. As those of his generation pass on I am becoming more aware of what a huge impact WWII left on history. I had four uncles serving our country in different parts of the world and used to be amazed at family gatherings how much the war meant to my grandparents and their children.
Now 69 years since the end of the war, and my having just finished the book "Unbroken", I am gaining some better insight. God bless that generation for doing what they had to do to save civilization itself. Thank you Mr. Zamperini for your sacrifices and for your great example.

My condolences go out to the Zamperini family. Your Father and Grandfather was a true american hero. My Father met Louis at the pre Olympic trials in 1936 in Los Angeles. He thought the world of your Dad, and took me to meet him several times in the late 1970's at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, and I can tell you it was a great honor for me. It was so evident that he was a man of great character. My Dad passed away in 2012 at age 97, but not without reading "Unbroken" which he loved. I look forward to seeing your Dad's story on the screen in December.
I send you my deepest condolences,

God bless Mr. Zamperini's family. We all morn the loss of another true hero and great humanitarian. I feel for you as I also lost my father 20 months ago (he would be 92 today). My father also was a POW of the Japanese for 3 1/2 years, MIA for 2 1/2 years (they would not tell the US who was captured) and part of the Bataan Death March. Although he was not as visible as Mr.Zamperini, he also forgave his captures for torturing and murdering his friends at arms in the death camps and was a deacon in his church. God rest Mr.Zamperini's soul. God kept both of these men safe to tell their stories. Mr. Zamerini is an example to all of us of heroism and forgiveness. God bless his family and keep them safe. Sincerely, Nancy Brian, Savannah, GA.

July 10, 2014

Good bye to another true hero. I read "Unbroken" and was amazed at Mr. Zamperini's courage and will to live. I am so looking forward to the movie but at the same time saddened that he did not live long enough to see his amazing story on the big screen. His family should be so proud of his service and sacrifice, as I am a grateful American for my freedom that he so bravely fought for. My Dad was a WW2 veteran (1909-1999) and when he passed I wrote a poem. Here is the first verse.

Picked up the newspaper the other day
I saw another veteran had passed away
I never noticed this before
Until my Dad became one more

I never miss an opportunity to shake the hand of a veteran and thank them for their service to our country. We should never forget.

My sympathy to his family.

I read Louie's biography Unbroken three times. His story was so amazing to me not only for his bravery and service but for his mindset that forgiveness is better than holding a grudge, that love is better than hate. When I am having a long or hard day I use his story to put everything into perspective and to remind myself that people out there are experiencing much worse. When I heard of his passing I mourned for quite awhile. My dream has always been to meet him and I was overcome with anger that I was never able to.

God bless the Zamperini family and the hero we have all come to love.

I was honored to have met Louie in the late 1960s at the Hollywood Presbyterian Church youth group. He became a mentor to many of us in the junior high and high school youth program. Many of us just called him Uncle Louie. We kept in touch and he followed me through my 33 year law-enforcement career. Thanks for being the best uncle I could ever have asked for. Luke, our family met you and Louie on a Mexican Riviera cruise--we were your dinner table mates the entire cruise--it was such a pleasure to spend each evening with you both-it was a few years before "Unbroken" was written, so we'd never even heard his story until that week. We've all talked since then--how blessed we were to have met him--he truly was such an amazing man whose courage, endurance and forgiveness are so inspirational.
We all have your family in our prayers--May God bless him. The Hoffman Family, Nashville, TN

A legend in his own time and an inspiration to everyone he touched. We grew up in Torrance near his mother's home. Though from time to time he and my father talked as fellow USAAF Asia-Pacific Theater officers, Louie said little about himself, but we knew. Always hoping for more, we listened carefully when he spoke. When he sometime gave talks at our local YMCA, they weren't about him but about commitment, doing the right thing, doing your best, and doing it well. His was among the school records inscribed above the gymnasium door; it fostered excellent coaching and accomplished distance runners who finally broke that record several times in the late 1950s. Like his Savior, he led by example and his memory lives on. After a long life of meeting life's challenges by walking in Jesus' footsteps, may he now find peace resting beside Him in heaven.

As a writer myself, I was inspired greatly through the wonderfully written words of Karen Hillenbrand's "Unbroken". Thank you for bringing this indominatble spirit to life; he touched me in many ways. I'm going to see Jolie's production with renewed awe and gratitude.

A True American Hero Rest In Peace

July 4, 2014

Truly an inspiration. GOD had a purpose for this man, and I believe he was welcomed into Heaven with the words, " Welcome, true and faithful servant."

Lou was in my fathers' own 42 Squadron the 11 TH BGH. I spoke to a survivor who was called when the book UNBROKEN came out. He told me how the Squadron had believed he had died in the Pacific and how glad they were he survived the crash. May God bless and comfort Lou's family, and thank God Lou lived to know his story would be told in a movie. He was a Christian and missionary to Japan for a period after the war. Lou served his country and his God.

When I read Unbroken and Lou miraculously survived the crash, I knew God had saved him for something special. Now I know why. I had the unique privilege of speaking to him on the telephone and will always remember our conversation and the feeling that I knew him a little. Unfortunately I was not aware that he was in RI and did not see him. I know he fought the good fight and has finished the race. Heaven will surely be enriched by his presence.
