Pauline Addie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2011.
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Tennis Hall of Famer Pauline Betz Addie has died at 91. She was the top women's player in the United States in the 1940s.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame said Thursday that Addie died Tuesday at an assisted-living facility in Potomac, Md. She had suffered from Parkinson's disease.

She reached the finals of the U.S. National Championship (now the U.S. Open) every year from 1941-46, winning the title four times. In 1946, she won the Wimbledon singles championship without losing a set in the entire tournament.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, she was raised in Los Angeles and introduced to the sport as a child by her mother, a physical education teacher. Addie was a longtime teaching professional in the Washington, D.C., area.

I taught tennis for Pauline at Sidwell Friends and privately in Maryland. To get the job, she asked me to play against her. She was a great champion and player, and an even better person. It is my great honor to have known her. I'm sure she is missed by all who knew her.

Pauline and her mother, Betsy were great friends and bridge partners of my mother. I had the pleasure of taking tennis lessons from Pauline in the early 1960s at Sidwell. She was a wonderful woman and what a life well lived. My condolences to her children.

I am sad to hear of the death of Pauline. I not only went to the tennis camp but worked for Pauline for 2 summers. I will always remember the fun times with all the Addie's and the time spent at the camp.

Truly one of a kind. Pauline excelled in everything she did. She was very kind, polite, generous, and extremely modest.
I had the pleasure of knowing her since the early 1950's, and have admired her since day one. We played a fair amount of tennis when she first came to Edgemoor, and she was very helpful in teaching me how to compete at a higher level. She was loved by the local, national, and international tennis community. She was a great human being, and will be missed by family, friends and admirers all over the world.

Pauline words can never describe how you touched my life and many others. Also thanks for sharing to me that your greatest match was your loss in the 45 Forest Hill finals. To all your family and friends and the many wonderful memories I will always cherish.
